For Mopar Brand...

Wow, Just posted this info in a previous thread. Sounds like winter prep has begun:D Geno’s Garage has some very good price’s on all our filters. Their transmission filter is a Mopar and comes with a cork gasket. This should work fine for the stock pan. I am assuming you are stock (signature?). If you are using a Mag-Hytec pan, do not use a cork gasket.

I am not real fond of cork but I am stock. I would prefer a quality rubber gasket with crush washer, the impossible to over torque type gasket.

OEM FILTER ????

dave f , is that the filter that is in the plastic case with the hole on the bottom ? if so ... REMOVE IT ASAP ... think aboutthe size of the filter , then its just sucking fluid in from that smallish hole in the bottom , yes it puts the pickup point lower in the pan , but thats a small orifice to draw thru , get the earlier 727 dacron filter that is open all the way around .

just my 2 cents

Mopar Muscle,

Is the filter you are talking about got black plastic around it,if so that was the filter that Bill K sent me to install, but I changed it to the old stile 727,is that the one you mean?

The filters that come with our vb's are the old 727 gaskets without the plastic. The only place the plastic covered ones go is in the garbage.

You won't have a problem with the plastic one it's just not the best in my opinion. For one it's about 10 times the price and has alot less exposed filter area.

Ditto what John and Stefan stated. The OE filter with the black plastic and sheet metal shrouding around the filter element is not the preferred filter. The older style filters are much better, do not have the shrouding and cost a little less than half as much (if both are purchased from your Dodge dealer). Additionally, Roy (owner of Mag-Hytec) recommends the use of the non-shrouded filter for reasons stated above.

BTW, if you haven't added one of the two different Mag-Hytec transmission pans to your 47RE yet, it is a very worthwhile investment in the longevity of your transmission! Increased structural integrity of the transmission housing and additional transmission fluid just to name several attributes. IMO, that should be a must have first upgrade.

I have a 99 3500 auto, and just did a transmission oil change with a filter from Geno's, it came with a hard gasket with a double o-ring seal and I haven't had any leaks so far. The MAG-HYTEC pan has the same oil capacity as the stock pan does on the newer 47s, if you want more oil capacity you need to get the Double Deep. Have fun and don't make to big of a mess! ;) :)

The people a Phils transmission must have switched it with the back plastic one, because that is the one hat was on there,no biggy,I only had it on there for 1000 miles and then I changed it.

I never opened the boxes that the TC and VB came in so I don't know what was in there, and I know Bill K would not send something if it was the wrong one or a part that isn't so good,so the transmission shop must have misplaced the one that was sent and just grabed one off the shelf. .

The P/N for the one from Geno's Garge is 52118789, $21. 95+S/H.

This comes with the gasket, and is listed as 1999+. I take that to mean for the newer trucks also, and I don't remember any plastic on it. As I remember it was all metal with a square cut pick up hole. You other gents does this sound like what you are calling the old type filter?

727 Dacron filter.....

I am assuming that 727 is the type of transmission... ... ... sorry for the stupid question... . and the filter has two or three mounting holes in it? I remember my 96' CTD filter had two mountiong holes.

Jason

The 727 filter has 3 mounting holes in it, the newer style only has 2 (you will need a third bolt). The transmission gasket that the Dodge sells is a very good one. It is made of hard plastic and has 2 rubber sealing rings on both sides of the gasket. It can be reused several times - handy when making VB adjustments! I've NEVER had any leaks with this new style gasket - even after I reuse them. I get both items mentioned above from Dodge - cheap and convenient.

Steve

for the price listed i'll guess the genos filter is the newer type stock mopar filter and not the one you want to use , i'm still trying to figure out what the rocket scientist that designed it was thinking of :p

the 727 is the original torqueflite that the 518/47RE is based upon .

the pan gasket is the same as is the filter mounting scheme , most VB's have the extra screw in the VB , you just pull that extra screw and install the filter using 3 screws . .

can someone post pix? i had what looks like a metal filter. then i ordered the gasket and filter package from genos and a material filter came (with a metal band around the edge). are these the two we are talking about? if i use the material (dacron?) filter can i get away with using only two mounting bolts/screws (torx head). ?

I like the ATP,Mighty, and Napa brand filter kits. They use the old style 727 filter, with a nice heavy duty rubber gasket. I hate cork,in this day and age, cork gaskets are unacceptable to me,they leak,if not now, after it crushes,it will leak,or weep in time. I have reused my Napa gasket 3 times already, still is better than a new cork one. I need to get a double deep pan, just need to save more $$ first.

Here's the one I got.......

Came from Napa. This is the kit with rubber gaskets. Bought one of these and one without the gasket. Wasn't sure if mine would be OK.

The prices were $8. 24 with gasket and $4. 72 without.

Garrett

Garret,I use those kits a lot, that is a good kit, nice gasket, and the gasket holes are snug on the bolts,so you can start all 4 corners without them falling out when you raise the pan.

trans filter

O. K. , now I'm cornfused. I have an 01 auto. When I change the transmission oil and filter I should use the old style 727 filter that ,really, you can get at Kragens, right? I don't need to fill two holes, three holes, or some such?? It will just go in the same way the "old" filter came out?? The new one isn't as good with "flow" as the old one?
