the carriers change at 4:10--that is 4:10 and up is one carrier and anything below 4:10 is the another carrier---chris

That's only in the 80... 60s and 70s use the same carrier 4. 10 and down.

Anybody have any response about the only driving 30 miles at time the first 300? The guy ate WCD said they actually have you sign a form that voids their warranty if you exceed recommended mileages.

well now I'm confused as I had the 3:54 to 4:10 swap in my truck back in '00 when it had the 60 and 70 and I could've sworn the carriers were changed, but since it was so long ago maybe I'm wrong and it's 4:56's that the carrier needs to be changed out in those axles like you say--I swapped in a 80 rear back in '02 after breaking an axle in the 70. but it had 4:10's in it already, so I could definitely be wrong as I've got a mix and match truck and sometimes I forget---sorry... ... ... ... chris

4:10 and 3. 54 are different housings. You can use the housing but you have to get the appropriate gear set for that housing. I just did the swap about 4 months ago.

I swapped used gears for used gears and it was a direct swap with no additional shimming. Once the gears are already used there is no need for a break in period.

I picked up a set of 3. 55s with carriers to swap out my 4. 10s (4x4 3500). Now that summer is coming I need to find someone in NW WY, around Bozeman, MT, or around Idaho Falls to do the swap.

Anyone have any recommendations where I one can find a reasonably priced and well done job?

That is going a bit far. I used to work in a gear shop for a few years You only need to keep it slow under 50mph or so and no load for the first 100 miles max to get everything properly lubricated and get the gear set to RUN in a pattern and to keep heat to a minimum. a gear shop will set bearing tolerances a bit tighter at times so bearings need a breakin period. I is to keep temps down.

Check out Inland truck Parts

they have 2 locations in Montana Billings and Missoula. I worked at the Bismarck ND store they are a good company There labor rates tend to be more reasonable also.

95 Dana 80 to 04 Dana 80

what would be involved in changing the gears from a 1995 Dana 80 to a 04 Dana 80. A friend of mine is wanting to change his 04 from 410 or 11 to 354. I have 354 in my rear end but don't konw if I want to go that rought or not. Needless to say I need more pulling power I am pulling a 5er weighting about 9000 and he is pulling a Airstream. both are 2x4's but he has the high output. He has priced the gears at about 450. 00 and 250. 00 labor to have them setup. mine is a 5 speed his is a 6

For new gears, I would drive no more than 25 miles and let things cool down... the diff will get really hot in that time. Then I might stretch it to 100 miles, then 200 miles... then you should be good... I would also recommend changing the fluid because, as I said, it will get extremely hot and you will also have a bunch on metal flake floating around in there... and, if you went as far as changing gears, you most likely have new bearings as well...

IMHO, I'd be looking for used gears... you ought to be able to get a used set of 3. 55s for a D60/D70 for under $75 each... then the breakin is sorta not needed because as stated, they are already broken in... I wouldn't buy new gears for a D60/D70 just because they are so common...
