I have a serious problem with my # 6 cylinder. No ones knows what it is yet (we replaced the injector today with no luck) but we are sure it is in the short block. Sounds like metal on metal. (wrist pin maybe?) I am meeting with the regional DC rep tomorrow and see what they have to say. I am not going to accept anything less than a new short block and heads. Anyone else go through this? My truck has only 16k miles. . Mileage sucks, no power etc... . and makes a hell of a racket... .

I had the same complaints @ 10k mi. I had a VA and boost El. DC voided my drive train warranty. I paid 5k$ to Cummins for a new short block. power and mileage went up about 30%.

GOOD LUCK

My dad had a similar problem (horrid knock)with the #1 cylinder in his '99, had 40K miles, good mileage and was only slightly BOMBed. The dealership furnished the short block, no questions and signed the work order for a garage across the street to do the assembly.

When would the knock be most noticable? My mileage has dropped significantly in the past couple months and there is a loud knock, metal to metal sound, in the upper rpm's. Talked to one diesel mechanic who said not to worry unless you could hear it at an idle. I had tried to forget about it until I read this topic...

Met with the DC reg rep today. HE called Cummins HQ and Cummins want's the dealer to tear down the engine. I have a feeling I am getting a new short block and will insist on heads to match. I will know more next Tuesday after the engine is torn down...

The knock can be heard all the time, really loud on start up and a constant ticking when running and also on shut down. Get's quieter when you let the foot off the gas... . I would suggest you bring it to Cummins for a check out. . and a listen... .

Well a new short block is on the way # 6 is toast(looks like a war went on in there) and the service manager said it is the worst failure he has seen of a 24V. I am sure it has been there since new. The block will be out on Monday and I will post a picture of #6. We are sure it is a bad wrist pin. . I should be up and running by Tuesday night. .

Not wanting to sound stupid but here are a few things I learned about this whole mess.

#1 Having never owned a diesel truck before I assumed the engine was always noisy and until I went to a 3rd party (not the dealer) to have the oil changed I had no clue the racket my engine was making was not just the normal diesel clatter. . ( I had been around some diesel power gens like Deautch(sp?) and 671s but they were used for power gen and in a enclosed power house so the noise was always loud) He tipped me off and I went to Dodge and then Cummins for a check out. ... Always nice to have another 24 around to listen to. Once I started to listen to others I knew I had problems. I always thought I wasn't getting the power or fuel mileage I shoul,d but never could figure out why, since the truck had plenty of balls not towing a load. . Once I started to tow, I knew something wasn't right. .

#2 Only use a Cummins or Mopar oil filter (I had a Mopar on and am glad I did)they are built different than 3rd party oil filters. DC and Cummins will give you hard time or void your warranty if you have a problem.

#3 Keep a good relationship with your local DC Service Manager it will pay big dividends down the road also with their Diesel tech in the shop. I bought my truck at a dealer 90 miles away, but get it serviced at the local dealer and this guy is great... . ( I took it to the Dodge dealer when the noise was pointed out and they sent me to Cummins they didn't want to screw around and have submitted my out of pocket to DC for reimbursment) The only service I needed before, was oil changes, and they just had the shop grunts doing it. I feel the Diesel tech they have there is really good and if he had done the oil changes(and heard the engine) I would have had this resolved along time ago...

#4 Most of All... Keep All your old parts if you are going to do any "add ons" that could void your warranty. (Need I say more?)
