who has relocated their batteries?

since getting the optima yellow tops i've been thinking of relocating the batteries to the right rear. anyone done this? i've heard 4x4 shops doing this. is there a reputable one or near sf?

Ameri... you might try shooting hvac an email... the pic posted of his twin turbo showed at least the passenger side battery missing. Don't know if he moved it or eliminated it.
Also may want to try Sportbike. He comes up with a lot of this stuff.

I have wanted to move mine back for better weight distribution.
Although now I'm liking the extra weight for truck pulling on the front.

I have talked to guys who have relocated them both to underneath the passenger side of the cab.
Just a thought.
Does anyone know what kind of energy loss you take with 18 feet of cable?

I've thought about that for a long time! The truck is so heavy in the front and I need the weight in the rear without 4WD. I doubt there'd be any problem if you used HEAVY welding cable. A good sized one would have to be run back up to the fuse blocks for all the accesories. Make sure they're covered good if they're down in all the splash crud. Junk that builds up between the terminals can run a battery dead in short time! Craig

I'm also toying with the idea of locating them under the bed for better weight distributition.

As far as loss of power Gene, I you are sure to run a heavy enough gauge of wire to compensate for the extra length, the amount of power loss would be insignificant.

Any comments on locating standard batteries under the bed? Getting that 120lbs. off the front end would sure be nice. I'm worried about acid and corrosion. Should I be?

When I raced dirt track (hobby class) years ago (yep I did) we put the battery over the left rear wheel for all those important reasons. We were building a car (O'Lordy), but we did it and I did quite fine thank you.


Leave your batteries where they are, my friend. You're driving and industrial engine in a cute body. Think about it.

I wouldn't move mine back under the bed unless they were Optimas with no maintenance worries. By then the lighter weight Optimas would probably balance out any gain because of the weight of the large cable you would need to run. You would need at least 00 gauge wire to run enough juice, I've seen times #1 gauge jumper cables aren't enough to crank a Cummins.

I hung my red-tops in a s. s. box on the outside of the frame, under the drivers door.
From there its a short run to the starter with a #4-0 cable. Now I have to run a Q. D. up front somewere to use jumper cables.

i think "THE HVAC" has retained his passenger side and ditched or "sucked in" his driver's side. i've heard his rationale for it and it makes total sense, but i'm not ready to go solo just yet.

FWIW: I mounted a second pair of batteries (yellow tops) under my 1994 cab with a Summit battery box (cut in half to make two cases) and some aluminum angle. The boxes bolt directly to the frame, one on each side of the truck. http://dodgeram.org/ki4cy/wiring/batteries.htm

Remember you guys with Optimas can run them upside down. You won't have to worry about acid with them either. But like someone posted above batteries need to stay clean or they can actually discharge through that crud on them. You could really tuck them away mounting them upside down under the Bed. I would recomend reds over yellows also.

We have several 1/2t GMC PUs and have to locate a second battery in the bed for starting irrigation engines. We set the battery in a platic box with an open top and run 00 welding lead to the front. Very seldom do we have any problems and are able to turn over some very large CAT engines.

Badfish. Tell me why or in which situations you recommend either the red or yellow top optimas. I destroy the factory batteries in about 1-2 years with all the boosting of irr. engines, when working on these engines sometimes it is required to crank pretty hard and in most situations I cross the batteries to make 24v.

With the front end of a 4x4 weighing in at 4000 lbs,I just can't see the benefit of moving 100-120 lbs.

I run a route here and tulsa and deal face to face with all the Battery dealers here. The warranty percentage of the yellows is very high!! Most of the places that use them are 4x4/car stereo places. THe car audio people have pretty much quit using them period. When I come accross a yellow top warranty I usualy cross it over to a red for them. Also the warranty, On the red(this in on the Interstate label) its 36 month free and 72 month pro-rate. The yellow is only 12 free 24 pro-rate. I know this goes against optimas recomendations. But I do know I sell 2-3 times more reds than I do yellows and I still end up with more yellow warranties that I do red warranties. My . 02
