I used to have an 1989 D350 Single Rear Wheel with a 5 Speed. Put 170,000 miles on it in 7 years then sold it to buy my current 96 3500 SLT Ext Cab Dually with 5 speed.
To my knowledge, the 89 is still running with somewhere between 350,000 and 400,000 miles on it.
I was standing near a road once and heard this funny sounding diesel, I turned around and there was a beater early 70's Ford and it had a Cummins plaque on the side. Not sure what it was or when it was made but I'd guess it had been that way for quite some time.
As far as I know, Cummins built the 5. 9 in 1984 as an industrial engine. Dodge started R&D on it a few years later, and 1989 was the first year it was introduced in a pickup. I think that was in an issue of the TDR either one or 2 issues ago.
I believe the Cummins ISB was introduced in 1983 but first installed in a Dodge in 1989. However in the late '70s Dodge did use a small Chrysler/Mitsubishi diesel in some pick ups. 103 HP @3700 rpm & 168 ft lbs TQ @ 2200 rpm.
My uncle's excavating company had a 89 d-350 with a 12 vavle cummins and a 5 spd. The thing was sick and of course we turned the pump up on it. He bought it from some old guy that had since new. I drove it for two summers while I was in college, but the rest of the truck needed too much work, so we traded it in. The motor was prime though.
