Who knows Texas?

I've had some good conversations with you TDR Texans and am wondering what is the best route through your state?I'm in Birmingham AL and need to stay out of snow and drive a good road. We need to get to Calf. to drive up the coast to Oregon. Any info would be appriciated.

If you want to stay out of snow, your best bet may be I-10. You'll have to go through Houston and San Antonio, but there is great food to be had in both places. I-10 moves pretty quickly. I-20 may be good too, but it's more likely to get snow/ice.

I-10 would be good. Only advice I could give is try to go through Houston in the middle of the day. This would allow you to avoid rush hour traffic as they call it. I live about 30 minutes south of I-10. I took it all the way to Phoenix last year with a 30ft 5er,good road.

Definitely go through Houston at some time other than +-2hrs of rush time.

I left Pasadena, TX at 3:15PM and did not get to Conroe until 6:30 PM. Took TX-8 loop and got hung up on I45 north.

I10 across Texas is rated as one of best Interstates in US. I10 across Miss. and La. was rated as one of worse Interstates in US.

None can compare to I40 across Arkansas though! Bill C. must've stole all our highway money when he was Gov. and Pres.

You are on I-20 in Birmingham, I would get on I-20 to Ft. Worth then NW on 287 to Amrillo, then I-40 West. 287 is 4 lane most of the way and is pretty good road. I don't think you will hit any ice for the next 2 or 3 days. I-10 is a good route but rough all the way across Louisiana and you are way south of where you want to go. bg

Isn't I-10 in Lousiana (on the state line of LA & TX) the place where the police pull you over and just take your cars(because they think you might have drugs in you car)? I thought that I saw this on 60minuites about a year or two ago?

That's the place, haven't heard much lately, I think they concentrat on East bound traffic though fot the drug thing.

Just for a little follow-up on that story. The city that was the focus of the investigation was Sulphur, LA. Fortunatly there was a change in command in the beginning of 2000. The new police chief is a good man. I've known him all my life. They have really backed off on the drug seizure thing. I drive I-10 everyday through Lake Charles into Sulphur and rarely see a city police unit around. They have also fixed I-10 through Lake Charles so it's nice and smooth. It's pretty smooth from Lafayette(middle of the state) to the Texas state line. I ran into a little construction on the Texas side between Orange and Beaumont. After that is was smooth sailing to Houston. Don't know about any further than that.

If your on I-20, ride that all the way to
I-10 merge.
I-10 is kinda lonely thru La. to me.
Thats the way I would go from Birmingham.
That is if you want to go to southern cal.

Thanks for the info on Texas. We're going across on 20 to the 10/20 merge,it looks like a better road and quicker. I'll try to hook up with some of you as we head towards Oregon.
