Who makes a Diesel SUV?

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies

Thanks, TDR Staff

"Hey Dl5treez.....is it true?"

Drove an 05 CTD and an rode in an 05 Liberty CRD

That is good to hear Rick. I haven't actually seen one yet but would like to check one out. Might have to come by for a test drive next time I'm in N. Idaho.

I have taken a couple of trips in my brother's Liberty, I really like it. Rides well, not much road noise, smooth. Just feels really weak with the 3. 7L V6 compared to my truck.

Is that Jeep Liberty a special order thing or do they make them from the factory like that?

Is that the rumor going around that GM will make D/Max Surburban/Tahoe? Or, is that just wishful thinking?

 I can't remember where I read that. I believe that I read it over on one of the GM pages; so likely it is just a rumor. Who knows. They certainly lost market share when they dropped the last diesel Suburban.

Who cares about the Suburban... . how about a full size Ram based SUV w/ the cummins :D I was looking for a diesel SUV for towing when I bought my Ram, but couldn't bring myself to buy an excursion, so I settled for a quad cab Ram.

They make them like that. The only thing you special order is options. Leather vs cloth or what type of sound system... that type of thing.

Currently it is wishful thinking on the Suburban/Tahoe D'max. However we have not seen the ordering info on '06 models. PM me late May and I will let you know.

Jeep Liberty with the VM Motori, Italian diesel. We have sold about 35 of these and no major problems reported.

Rick,

Do you care to comment about the problems you would not classify as being 'major'? :)

No problem Matt! First of all my wording could have been better. We had a couple of the manual trannys develop a vibration that our techs fixed fairly easily and no other reports of that problem. They really have been trouble free except since first writing on this we now have 1 down with major computer problems. I say major because the parts are VIN related and are on National back order. We are going to have to request a part pulled off the factory line to get it. This still could take another month and you can't just take one off one on the lot to replace later. I'm gonna put him in another rig. All in all these are good running, trouble free vehicles.

The CRD is available with a manual? I thought it was available with a 5sp slushbox only?

Whoops! Sorry. . I'm getting my gas rigs mixed up with the deisels. You are absolutely correct.

It has 2. 5 Liters ... sold about 35 of these

Then you should know by now that it is a 2. 8L motor, not a 2. 5L. These are two completely different motors that VM Motori makes.

Thanks for getting back to us, Rick.

Is the above mentioned Liberty (with the computer probs. ) a CRD model?

All in all, the Liberty vehicle itself seems pretty solid. My concern/interest lies primarily with the CRD specific drivetrain and it's supported systems. The fact that it has the same transmission they put behind the make believe 1/2-ton Hemi's is pretty cool.

Matt

Hummer H1's (the REAL, Millitary Hummer) come only with a diesel (6. 2/6. 5) and the H2's come only with a gasser.

I would be seriously interested in a manual transmission Liberty. Manual transmissions get better fuel economy, which is one of the advantages of a diesel anyway. A man trans/diesel SUV is the answer to the fuel economy problems associated with SUV's.

Yes, unfortunately, this is a CRD. The good news is of course, that is my only (knock on wood) one down with this or any other problem. There is talk of a manual in this rig so ask me again after mid May when generally we receive the new model year ordering info.

Rick,

Thanks for the update. That's good news. It sounds like the general concensus is that these are going to be solid little platforms.

Mid-May is only a few weeks from now. Then we hope to hear more good news. :)

Matt

I saw and sat in a liberty CRD at camp JEEP at the NY auto show. I couldn't open the hood. It wasn't available to buy in New York. It seemed like a nice little truck and the gassers are popular around here.

I just now tried to build and price one at jeep.com and couldn't find the CRD option though it was listed on the title page.

You will need to remind me then to see if we have that info yet.

In answer to Wayne M... . a fully loaded Limited CRD with every option available(including leather) runs $31,500 minus $500 rebate and another $1000 if you finance through Chrysler.
