went to change the oil for the first time and I think they used lock-tite and a 100 ft. lb's to put the oil filter on. it took an oil filter wrench with a 4 foot board and 45 minutes of struggling to get the filter off #ad
. It skweeked the whole way off. not a drop of oil on the gasket!!!

does dodge or cummin put the filters on???

Don't feel bad, mine was worse yet to get off. I'd assume since it's a Dodge filter on the truck, they put it on.

A tech from Mother Cummins told me that they run the engine for about 10 min. and then remove the filter and drain the oil.

Motor is then packaged and shipped to DC for factory install. DC puts in the oil and installs the filter... . he didn't know what type of welder they used.....

That's why my oil came out at 750 miles.

Im pretty sure the engines come with filters and oil from the Factory. At least the ones we seen being assemble at CMEP Columbus IN were.

They run each engine 2 minutes (I think) to check for leaks. Engine filters and all get painted and clear coated.

Fleetguard filters and Premium Blue oil. Over 1600 gallons of oil used per day.

Hello all
I changed my oil at about 500 miles and did not have any trouble getting it off. That was 10000 miles ago.
A trick I learned from this site is to slide a plastic bag over the filter (from the bottom) and kinda fold it down out of the way till you loosen the filter and then slide it up and remove the filter. This way the bag catches the oil that spills out when you have to tilt it to get it out. It works great. I have changed my fuel filter once and am getting close to doing it again and I hope I don't make a mess like I did the first time.
Love this truck.
See Ya
Chris

I see i'm not the only one with the filter welded on. I think i'll write DC and copy Cummins that they need to use some lube on the gasket and throw the impact wrench away.

Dubster, I have found on my last truck and my current one that if I let the truck sit overnight that I don't have to use the bag trick. the oil will be about 1/2 inch lower than the top of the filter. since this was my first change on this truck I had the bag in place just in case but did not need it. I did have to re-route the battery cable to get it out of the way and I sure the skin will grow back on my hands.

Don't feel too bad. I banged my knuckles up and was soooo gumpy that my wife decided it was time for her to go shopping. 1st time in 28 years she ever did that! I might go buy another truck just to see that happen again.

My truck came new with a MOPAR filter, not a Fleetguard. I'm inclined to believe the other statement saying that Dodge put the filter on themselves. My truck was born in Mexico, so maybe there's some variation in procedure between plants/sources.

I used a 1. 5" nylon band-type filter wrench to take my filter off. It may have collapsed it a bit around the TOP and took both arms to wrench the thing loose - but it DID come loose! I don't see how the job would be possible using conventional filter wrenches.

Don't feel bad, Tom. Mine took me the better part of a day to get it off the first time. #ad
My confidence as a man was in question for awhile during that operation.

They've all been much better since I'm the one installing them now. #ad

I understand that MOPAR filters are made by Fleetguard. It's just their lower grade filter, not the Stratapore.

Mick2500,

BTDT too. Don't you hate it when it is on the joint where the skin folds when you move you fingers? It takes forever to heal. :-(

Gentlemen, if you do a search on "oil filter" and tight you will find numerous posts dating back well over a year. Thanks to this group I was able to anticipate the problem. My purchasing dealer offered my first oil change for free. Guess who had to fight that first filter #ad
Anywho, you are not alone. My truck was built in St. Screwloose and had the tight filter (as per the poor guy who had to remove mine #ad
) Mexican built trucks have the same problem. Advice: let your dealer do the first oil change... . money well spent and your nuckles will be clean enough to drive your new truck #ad

Cheers!!
