John, if you don't mind me asking, how does one get around annual emissions testing with a deleted vehicle? Put it back to stock every year?

It depends on the emissions testing location, some just don't look that hard.

I was just talking about this yesterday. My buddies shop is an inspection station here in PA. PA is now requiring the inspection station to do a visual emissions control checklist on every vehicle that comes in for the annual safety inspection station. This checklist is accompanied by a book that lists emission parts that are required to be in place on every vehicle and is listed by year and manufacturer.

Even though we don't have diesel emissions testing in PA, the state has found a way to clamp down on deletes through the annual inspection. I realize that there are some locations that will overlook missing parts, but your reputable places and those who are not willing to risk losing their inspection license and or the fines associated will not risk it.

I've been in the shop when people have come by with a deleted diesel and he just turns them away. He is extremely busy and isn't willing to risk his license to let one slip through. People are angry and often very upset when they are told no, but it is reality.

This is one of my main concerns. I took the 05 motor, which was pretty good, and made it better. The 04.5-07's had crappy pistons, and they're gone. I went with 03-04 style pistons, but the HO marine versions that are much stronger. I've also ditched the 3rd gen emissions cam for a torque happy cam, among other things. I still make more power than the '18's do, but I am not sure I'll notice the difference with the double OD's vs the gearing in the NV-5600.

My NV5600 is a joy to drive, and I'd miss rowing gears but IMHO nothing on the new trucks is worth any money but the Aisin.

I have never felt my 05 wasn't up to any task I put it against. GVW's of 12K+, or GCW's of 26K+... it has handled them all with ease. I've been able to tow with a GCW of over 18K at 70, up a grade, with a 30 mph crosswind and stay in OD with 1 finger on the wheel. It really has never let me down capacity wise. I know the new trucks are better, but are they enough better to warrant the cost?

I guess I am just shocked at how much the price of a pickup has gone up in 12 years. I am quite certain the same difference didn't exist between 1993 and 2005, and I don't feel the technology difference of 93-05 is that much different than 05-18. Maybe I'm wrong.
MSRP is a shocker for sure, just do the usual shopping/looking around/internet, and should come out 12-15k under sticker. Always let dealers know that you are more than willing to go out of market area as well, for the right deal. It worked for me.

John really considering a auto?!
Just saw your 05 is for-sale, sorry to see it go! This has been my "role model build" for my Ram.
I got an auto because of my wife's health problems (head inj) but as she is better, I really 'want' a G56 :)

You WILL wish you had done it sooner! The 18 will easily output your current truck. The cab room is MORE than enough. The rear air ride is AWESOME!!!

Get ER Dun!!!

Butt butt butt you live in California.....:D

Where I live, it's not uncommon to dip into the 20's a night. I have to scrape the ice off of my windshield in the mornings.

I believe my thermometer is reading about 6 degrees at this moment. 50+ mile per hour winds earlier, settled down now to 15-20mph. Tired of winter, ready for spring.

Glad I live in Ca :p

Hopefully ur upstate, or away from the dimwit political centers. Wife's in Florida.....and I am stuck here.:(

Originally from Norcal but I live in the middle now. Luckily my county votes 80% RED :D

If you like watching your pillar gauges, (and other gauges with your mods), you will miss your '05.
No way around that.

I've only had a 4th gen... It's my first diesel ever. So can't really advise you on nostalgia or sentiments. Good luck with your decision and post pics if you make the change

I'd keep the '05 if you can afford to buy without letting it go. Now that manual trannies are not an option, it'$ value can only go up. I think it has not sunk in yet that the manual transmission is no longer an option to the general buyer.

However, trying to sell it and register it in a state that has emissions testing may be difficult?

Gauges are yesterdays toys, no need for them anymore on a new truck.
The EVIC shows everything thats needed and for more an Edge Insight does the rest.

OP, get a EGT gauge pre turbo, install sensor at the “Y” that will see the average temp. The 6.7 CTD has a PID that gives post EGT but you need a device to read it, but it’s post Turbo. The 4th gen gives the temps, post Turbo though, on the EVIC display.

My '07 is
2019 Has 3.73 only option for SRW. AD I agree with the others you will miss the fun you had with the 3gen, but think of it this way... You will be in 4gen and I will fill the void with lively conversations like we had in 3gen forum.
You'll probably hear conversations better as the 4th's are really quiet.
