OP, get a EGT gauge pre turbo, install sensor at the “Y” that will see the average temp. The 6.7 CTD has a PID that gives post EGT but you need a device to read it, but it’s post Turbo. The 4th gen gives the temps, post Turbo though, on the EVIC display.

For what? there is no need for any external gauge as long as the truck stays stock.
If something goes wrong that truck goes into limp by himself.
An EGT gauge on an DPF and DEF Truck that has more electronic just for the emissions then our Gen3 had for the whole truck does not need that.

On my 14 there are 5 EGT points to read.
EGT1 - DOC inlet
EGT2 - DOC outlet
EGT3 - DPF outlet
EGT4 - SCR cat midbed
EGT5 - SCR cat outlet

No EGT display on the EVIC on my Tradesman.

I agree with Ozy, no need for any aftermarket EGT monitoring on a stock engine. Unless it's just because you want to.

Talk me into, or out of doing the same.

I'm not too deep to turn back, but I am very seriously looking at selling my '05 and getting an '18. I was planning on a '20 or '21, but don't like where Ram is going with the interior and where Cummins is going with the CP4.

If I buy an '18 it will be a 3500 CC LWB Aisin with auto-level air suspension. The rest of the options are not as mandatory. I actually have found a couple I'm close to offering on. Wife and I drove a '18 Laramie Longhorn Southfork edition today and while she thinks it's great I think it's too much truck, interior wise. We do have 3 medium sized kids and will have kids at home for at least 10 more years.

My '05 does suit us well, but the back seat is shrinking fast and even the front seat seems roomier on the 4th gens.

My biggest fear is that a bone stock '18 will leave me disappointed over my modded '05. I'm sure it has the power for what I do, but there are times where I am using all of my power (415/850 at last dyno). I know the 6.7 and VGT will do better in the 1500-2200 rpm range thou.

As a family we did 1300 miles this last week, which is what sparked the thoughts (I should say re-sparked, it's been a slow burning log for some time). Throughout the drive I would find myself thinking, I'll miss the responsiveness of my tuning (nice thing about being my own tuner, it's exactly how I want it), or I'll really like the variable exhaust brake (as I'm descending a 7% grade without a trailer and the EB cycles every 3-4 seconds). Other things like, I enjoy watching gauges... but won't have to on a stock truck, or I sure can't make out the words on the book on CD with a 30 mph headwind at 70 mph, but I bet I could on a 4th gen. My oldest is only 12 but can't sit behind me without digging her knees into my back, thou my tall ass grew up riding around in the back of a '92 extended cab chevy.

So... what are your thoughts?

I'd had to spend a bunch of money and be disappointed.

You won't be disappointed. I've had three Dodge diesels post 2010 and each one has exceeded my lightly modified 2006........The 2006 was the greatest truck I'd ever owned up to the point of my 2014 Laramie Longhorn. That truck was a beast and they've only gotten better. The overall trucks capability is so much better it aint funny.

If you found one with aux switches and don't buy it, turn around now and kick your own a#s!

I'm not enthusiastic about the changes in the 2019 either. I expect they will have many new problems with the "upgrades" as often happens with reworking and retooling

I'm in on 2019 or 2020 , I purchased 2013 No Problems, 2007.5 lots of problems, 2003 No problems. 1998 No problems , It was loud had to sell. Gas was Cheap so bought V10s.

Down side on aux switches it moves some functions to the computer screen that are easy to select via the lower row of switches. Unless one really needs them, I do not have and would not want them.

If you plan on Auxiliary equipment, the Aux Switches are the ticket ,Its a lot of work to wire in the Distribution center.

I wanted the aux switches so bad but I was in a position that I had to spend the money before years end and I couldn't find the right combo. Oh well, thanks for goodness that Painless has their handy dandy fuse blocks.

If you add accessories like I do, ie backup/work lights, winches et cetera, the aux switches are priceless.

And congrats on the new ride!

So you know how friggin hard they are to find too!!

It's the first one I've seen with my other required options. It also has the keyless go, which I was very interested in.

And yes, I've put a deposit down. Go pick it up Friday.

Having a 3500 2017 I will say the dead pedal is frustrating but I would not trade back for my 2003 5.9

TCDiesel, can you modify a rail and still meet emissions, how expensive. I would be interested in hearing from someone that had the dead pedal and did this mod and had a good outcome. Im not into adding more power, just letting the power come on predictably and smoothly like my 5.9 did.

Personally I would get the newer 3500 if I didn't have the 2017. Im not sure if that is called a 19 or 20 at this point but it sure looks nice. Especially if they fixed the dead pedal issue with the Aisin. Its in the programming and the rep my local dealer called who sounded to be a mechanic admitted as such. Its real, it just doesn't bother some folks.

The instant you mod the rail the Tone of motor changes. Their are Seven of these restrictors in every 6.7 Rail 2007.5-18.The 2019 went back to the case piece like the 5.9. the 2019 cast machine rail cost more $ than the schedule piece. Yes you pass emissions.

They were one of those options I really wanted, but wasn't going to pass on a truck for. I want them for a couple of accessories, but my brothers '17 Ford has them and I couldn't be in a Ram without them :D

But I do run an on-board air compressor (ViAir 480C), and a Winch solenoid.

Extra lights, and switches are always a bonus. I doubt I ever use all 5, but it's worth it to me just for those 2.

That has been my plan for a couple years, but EGR is still there and some other things. This also works out better for us with planned road trips, and loan payoff vs kids potentially in college time lines. The 2019+ will probably be a great truck, but I know the '18 is.

I don't have a ton of miles on my dad's 17, but I've never been frustrated with the throttle response. Maybe it's how I drive, as others have mentioned, as I am pretty easy on the go pedal with my 05. Usually the last one away from the stop light, but the first one up the hill as they all lose speed :)

Yes, it moves the heated seats, ventilated seats, and heated steering wheel to only be on the 8.4 Screen. I'm fine with that, as the heated seats and wheel are automatic when starting.

Like you I didn't want NAV, so I was pleasantly surprised that this one doesn't have it. That was one thing in Dad's 17 I didn't like, but in Ram's defense I have yet to use any OEM NAV that I have like the integration on. I still think the cheaper Garmin's are better, but I also like to watch elevation as I drive and you can't do that with a map up on any OEM setup I have seen.

Any idea on the story behind the 3200 miles?

Yes. A retired couple bought it with plans to buy a 5er, and their friends were going to buy a truck/5er as well for a couple year road trip. One of the friends suffered a heat-attack, non-fatal, but the plans changed. Of the 4 big purchases only the Ram 3500 had been purchased so it was fairly easy to undo the plans. They traded it in on a Ram 1500 less than 75 days after purchase. It was put into service 3 months from yesterday.

Good for me.. basically brand new at a used price.
