I would like to put a 4500 in my 88 350 in place of the 435 when I put the 89's 5. 9 in it, the truck rarely exceeds 15k and from what I've read here the getrag seems marginal at best, and by dumping the 435 I won't have to lay under stepvans looking for adaptors to pull this swap off.

This poll should have a pretty good turnout, but it's slow as of yet! C'mon guys, there's been lots of views but only 3 votes, and one is mine!

When it quits working, will you bump to an NV4500? If so, then choose that you want to do an NV4500 conversion.

I didn't say NOW, I said when the chance presents it's self.

Need another option for the vote, need - or will you opt for a nv5600 6 speed?. . Thats what I'm looking for, at least a 6 speed. From what I've read and heard it seems there isnt much of a difference in the getrag vs. nv4500. That is once you up the horses and torque. I've been following James, 1stgen4ever, posts on both trannies. Sounds to me like internally there both about the same size etc... After spending the money, it looks it costs about the same for a 6 speed conversion vs. 5 speed. Give or take, if I'm gonna spend the money I want the 6 speed. Bill

Getrag--NV4500

I didn't vote because I plan to have one of each. My Getrag currently has 402k miles and needs a syncro on third. I am going to install a 4500 in the place of an automatic to do away with the problems associated with the PCM and TPS.

I intend to run them in sort of a comparison to see for myself. I have no complaints whatsoever with the Getrag. The innards of the 4500 don't look significantly bigger than the Getrag but I is clear to me from all the post from fwd owners that the Getrag is like the proverbial camel and the last straw.

Still, with proper attention and maintainence, the getrag may be the cheapest to run. If the bombing is big time, the 4500 or even the 5600 may not be enough.

Still rolling em up on the Getrag. And still box stock.

I finally got my rebuild done, and if it shifts like it did the 30 miles home from school, I will be extremely happy. As far as durability, everything in the case was in pristine shape, and this hasn't been no Sunday driver, pretty good shape after 217,000.

are you saying that a 435 will bolt to a 5. 9 cummins?

Chris,

What now? Classes are too slow now for ya. And think guys, next smester, he'll be taking 12 hours, instead of 18:eek:. What will he come up with then?

I agree with bgilbert- need more options, but it may be too late now for that. I know the NV4500 has a better reputation, but dont forget the 5th gear problem in them. And if you keep the Getrash lubed and dont lug it, it will do fine, as 1stgen4ever pointed out. I know a guy who has over 600K on his- and he fills it to the stock fill level every third oil change. Shifted smooth 2 years ago, no noises, no gear problems, etc. Engine could use some tuning by yours truly, though:D.

So that said, you need to add a NV5600, and another truck transmission, like an Eaton 7 speed. ;) Couple that with some 3. 07s, and I'd have the perfect set up ratio-wise, though the 3. 07s themselves may not be worth it.

Got the adapter and trannie to do the swap, but the extreme noise I heard was my differential, repaired it and the getrag is super quiet for now, probably because it knows there is a replacement setting in the corner waiting!! Tim

If you're towing you just can't beat the NV5600.

I love mine & although expensive initially, I'm convinced it will pay itself off in the long haul.

Just go lift one up & tell me which is stronger!

I can't imagine how I'd tow with a 5 speed anymore.

I have the 6 speed+the gear vendor & I still don't have enough gears at times.

I say if you tow, 6 speed or Eaton. If you don't tow much, get an automatic & have DTT fix er up!

After rebuilding my Getrag about 4000miles ago I have had no problems. Now If something were to break again I'd go with a 6 spd. I hope that dosnt come any time soon I dont have the $$ for that right now... .

I voted no because I don't WANT to change... ... I would like my Gutbag to last forever... . I think I would even opt for a rebuild if and when that time comes.

I don't tow or haul a lot, so it seems like the Gutbag is doing alright so far.

to Steveinaz, I asked about this swap in cummins conversions forum and got feedback on a 4 cyl version of this motor that was in stepvans w/435s

Anything is better then the slushbox I have now! My last truck was a '90 with the Getrag in it, that truck had 300k. Never touched the trans, I drove that one hard too. Guess I just hate automatics.

I am one that wants a 5600, now whether i can afford it or not when the time comes will dictate whether i do it or not... but i sure hope so, cause i believe in doing things rite the first time... .
