Recently put my 81 toyota diesel landcruiser on the road. Don't really know a whole lot about it. Anyone have any advice on them? What to look out for, etc. Thanks in advance.

I have a 71 and a 76. Ive had em both for a few years. The only bad thing I ever heard about em is something in the rear end tends to go south while offroading. I havent had any issues with either. Other than getting then to IM. Keep an eye out for asphyxiation. Burning eyes. Sore throat. Difficulty making decisions.

The only thing we had go bad (on our 72... wish we still had that) one time was we got the rear axle vent clogged from getting stuck in the mud and drove it. yep, blew the seals, other than that, Landcruisers are very good. Also watch out for rust in the curved section of the rear panel at the bottom... . Water collects there and that's why you see all the old LC's with diamond plate in that area.

A friend back in high school had one in which he dropped in a 383 Chevy with headers and straight piped. Lots of fun in his muddy 10-acre backyard throwing 4-wheel rooster tails - he always wore ski goggles when driving!

A coworker had a diesel landcruiser which he had to unfortunately sell since he couldn't import it to the US when he moved here from Canada since it didn't meet federal DOT standards. He said that it was a tank offroad too. He just about tears up when talking about it.

Check out this landrcuiser specialty website for cool stuff: www.sor.com

I ordered some awesome hard-to-find Landcruiser history books from there a few years ago. These books have lots of specs as well as on and offroad driving tests as tested in various rugged locations around the world. It's cool to see Australian or Japanese spec'd Landcruisers come with rear full floating axles. I really wish they would sell them here with diesel power. It would be the last vehicle I would ever buy since they're built so rugged.

There's also a magazine that I have sometimes been able to find in the odd Borders or Barnes and Noble called "Australian 4wd Monthly". The latest issue I picked up had a 4x4 Ute / work truck of the year test in which the Landcruiser (with a flatdeck "tray" and front and rear difflocks from the factory!) won.

If anyone's interested, I can photocopy this article and try to figure out my scanner when I get some time and email it.

I've got a 69 FJ40. It is not stock much anymore. The only think stock is the tub and the frame. I'm running D60 axles and 42" tires behind a V8, TH400, and Atlas tcase.

Go to www.ih8mud.com for info.

BTW, SOR (spinctor off road) is very expensive.

ih8mud is a killer website for info on conversions and other goodies. I have a '73 i'm tearing into, one of these days it'll be a beast like fj40charles is. I'm still searching for a GM or Early dodge(passeneger diff) front D60 if anyone has any hints. I have a dana 300 t-case and a T-18 4 speed, lookinf for a 5. 0 to put in it too. I've found a couple but no "deals".

Cruisers rule, i just can't stand jeeps they're so well... womanized now.

I have a 1968 FJ40, 3 spped on the column, orig 6. My Dad bought it new & had it in the family ever since. Both my kid learned to drive on it. Still use it all the time. Mostly for hunting here in Colorado so it has seen some hard times. solid as a rock still. Has 197k on her. Had the valves ground at 144K and thats about all that has ever been done. Well we had a little body work after an encounter with a quakie tree a time or two over the years.

IMHO, the Landcruiser has always been the 4x4 leader.

Box Stock '77 FJ40 here. . use it as a snow plow only... straight 6 is a great motor for plowing ... . only plow a 1. 25 mile private road . . very steep and twisty and off camber.

First rig was a 77 FJ40. Got it when I was 17. 207,000 miles and considering the lack of care that was shown by the previous owners, I was happy I only had to replace the clutch and pistons.
