I would like to hear from anyone who's got a temp gauge hook'ed up to the 5sp manual transmission. I need to know what is the "normal" operating temp of the this unit & what kind of fluctuations people are seeing under various loaded & unloaded conditions? At what temp should one worry regarding a high temp condition etc?
THANKS! #ad

I'm running an NV4500 5sp and have a trans temp gauge. My running temp - non towing - runs about 110-120. Towing it runs at about 150 to 160 - total weight when towing is about 12,000 lbs. Hope this helps.

I have a beaded thermocouple on the PTO cover with some insulation over it. In the spring , I'm changing the oil and putting in a well to get better readings. I gross about 14,200. The highest I've seen was 225 degrees running 75 mph and hellatious headwind. The Dana 80 hit 240 that day. The transmission is usually 180-190, normal towing-70mph. The rear is usually 15-20 degrees hotter than the transmission. I've never turned the meter on when unloaded so I don't know! I don't know what the limits are but I think I'm real safe yet. If not, the guys pulling BIG loads are in trouble! Craig

I have monitored trans oil temps for about 135K miles in my 96 5sp. Summer time temps empty run about 120 to 140. Hard pulling in the summer runs 150 - 190. Have never seen 200. Winter time temps run 50 - 100. Hard pulling in the winter will bring temps up to 140.

All temps are running in 5th. Temps pulling will drop about 20 - 40 degrees if you run in 4th. I found this out the few times I lost 5th gear.

I tapped the driver side PTO plate to add the probe.

Trans oil temps really follow engine oil temps. High engine oil temp(working engine) high trans temps.

Wind also has an effect. Staight on head wind will cool much better then tail wind.

I never like seeing temps get over 190.

I have always ran Amsoil Series 2K 75W90 in mine. Sampled and dumped every 30 -40K.

9812v 5spd towing in the wind towing the 5er
weighing in about 15,800lbs. The trans temp
was running 176F. The dana 80 showed 202F
Ambient temp was 84F.
I don't have temp gauges,used a raytec temp gun(electronic) after pulling over.

Mike, I have experienced the same temp readings on my '96 5sp as Bob. About 120 or so empty and 160 towing 10 to 12k. I have seem as high as 180 on hot summer days, over 95 degrees, and towing 10k on long hauls.
