Ok, time for tires. I really want to go to bfg AT's. I loved them on my other trucks. But I was wondering what kind of tire life people are getting out of them on the ram 2500's ?

I don't want to plunk down $800 on a set of tires that will only last 25k.

Any suggestions.

THanks,

Nick

I have heard complaints that recent BFG's are hard to balance. No first hand experience recently myself.

I assume you are aware the BFG's are not load or speed rated equivalent to the originals.

I'm planning on the 295 Nitto's myself.

I do not believe they make an E-rated BFG for our trucks. The 265/70/17 BFG AT is only a C-rated tire. Great for a half ton. . but not for anything more.

That, I didn't know. All I've had before were half ton trucks.

Thanks for the info.

Guess I'll look towards something else.

FWIW, I had the BFG's KO 315/75/17's on my '03 2500 4X4 (Hemi). Had good luck with them. They were "D"'s with a higher weight limit than the stock "Rugged Trails". Towed a 10K 5'r with them, no problems. The 265/75/16's ("D's") on the wife's '96 1500 have 30K on them and look new. I love 'em for the slick stuff. Never had a balancing problem. I've had a totaL of 5 sets.

BFG does make an E rated tire for our trucks. It is the BFGoodrich® Rugged Trail T/A LT265/70R17. I have not heard very many good reports on these tires. Here is a link to the spec sheet.

I have been shopping tires for 2 weeks. I am completely frustrated with the general lack of knowledge in the retail tire industry. Half the guys don't know what products the tire company they represent makes (Firestone/Bridgestone store), the other half were shocked when I asked for an E rated tire, "Dude, what do you need an E rated tire for?"

I think I'm going to have to take out a second mortgage to get a new set of tires. Why is the 17" version of a tire $75 more than the 16" version of the same tire? It can't be that much more costly to make.

Wow, I started just to tell you about the rugged trail and turned this into a rant! Sorry!

I should have been more clear... BFG doesn't make the 'BFG AT' in an e-rated stock size for our trucks... which s what he was asking about. From what I've read the rugged trails really aren't any better than the crappy michelins which I hate with a passion. ZERO traction in just about anything but dry pavement.

And I agree... last time I needed a tire it took me 3 days of running around town to find one and even then it took them 24 hours to get it shipped to them. It's still cheaper than buying one online and having it shipped then having it mounted/balanced... it's just a hassle no matter how you slice it.

I've been looking at the cooper ST's... e-rated 265/70/17... just not sure how long they will last.

BFG"s

I have them on my truck with 38,000. They look like they may last another 10k or so. I tow a 10,000 lbs fifth wheel and they have been fine.

I have the Rugged Trail's on mine from the factory. I say a great mileage tire for sure. 61k now and at least 20k more before replacement. I do rotate every 8k or so without a beat.

As for as traction all I can say is they work for me and my needs.

I do wish for a little bigger tire though.

I run 65psi. 90% highway and 95% un-loaded

I have no experience with the "new" compound they are using with the A/T "KO's"... but I have read many people with heavy trucks complaining about them since they changed to the "KO" ones...

I'm on my 8th set of BFG AT's. Great tires. This last set is a "used" take off set from a H2 hummer. 315/70/17 AT

I've always got a minimum of 50K miles out of each set and one set got over 71K miles. This was on a 89 3/4 ton diesel, 4x4 suburban,35/12. 5/16. 5 AT's. Balance has NEVER been a problem and my tire guys even mention how nice it is balancing BFG's because they're so easy on weights.

I just posted a message on this same board that a local BigO tire salesman told me that BFG just started production of LT285/70R17E TA/KO tires and that they expect to have them for sale in about a month. Hope he gave me correct info.

Thanks folks. I'm leaning towards just getting a set of cooper st's had a buddy with them on a 01 2500 4X4 CTD and he was happy with them. He also had a set of bfg at's on the same truck and they wore out quick. Local price is $189 a tire installed. I can't wait another month for tires, so I'll give these a shot.

I have the rugged trails now and I'm not real happy with the traction.
