You guys are a bunch of wimps! About every 2-4 weeks I get to predeliver a 50 ton Talbert trailer. 6 wheels X 10 lugs X 450-500 ft lbs. = 1 dead butt, (mine!) :-laf I am using a 3/4 drive torque wrench, but by the 2nd wheel, it's OLD!

Got you beat on that one! Saw an old 12V that was REALLY beat up at the gas station a few months back. Was kinda checking it out waiting for the guy to finish paying so I could get to the pump and noticed on EVERY wheel he was missing 2-4 lugnuts! Some were broke studs and a few were just missing. I mentioned it to the guy when he came out and he just kinda shrugged his shoulders and said its been that way ever since he bought the truck a few years ago... . Needless to say I would have made sure he was behind me going down the highway:-laf

I figure 6 will hold as well as 8. I have a 7lug wheel and a 6lug wheel on the back of mine.

The school bus has 10 nuts. You have to lift via the axle, not the frame, cuz they gots air bags. Then you remove the ten nuts. Then you remove the ten barrels to pull the inner wheel/tire.



By the way, the 1" impact gun weighs 27 lbs.



Then you tighten ten barrels and then thighten ten nuts.



Sometimes the nut is siezed to a barrel. Then you gots to install a special tool that locks onto the wheel, only it won't. So, you wrestle with that for a time.



Hope like the dickens you don't snap off a stud during the tightening process.

I just got finished removing my studded snows and rotating the fronts... thought I'd never finish.

Also decided to be nice and give the ball joints etc a shot of grease... them babies was dry.

Now for a test run Oo.

I use a 1/2" DeWalt electric Impact Wrench.

I use a 1/2" drive Snap On Air Impact Wrench to remove the lugs, a 3/8" drive Snap On Air Ratchet to run them back on, then I tighten them with the torque wrench. A guy has to love those air tools! Has anybody messed with those torque tubes? I have a friend that has a set, but I was curious how accurately they torqued the nuts. Glen

My son uses torque tubes all the time at his shop. He never gets complaints or has had a whell fall off so I guess they work.

I've used one on mine at times when I've done work there. Seems fine.

Torq Sticks are a POS. I used to sell tools (MAC dealer) and I'm quite familiar with them. They do NOT actually set torque to any given value. The actual torque on the fastener depends on the brand of air wrench, shop air pressure and the amount of wear on the wrench anvil, socket recess and any other extensions used. I won't allow anyone to use those things on a vehicle of mine and there are none of them in my shop.

I know some of the biggger tire stores around use them too. Maybe I'll run my my buddy's shop next time and run on wheel on with a torque tube then check it with my torque wrench. It sure would be nice, like I rotate a lot of tires anyway. :-laf Glen

I still have yet to encounter a shop with 1-1/8 torque tubes. :-laf I agree with KOG- there are too many variables to strictly rely on them alone. The variances in output between the AirCat and Snap On guns can make a difference in final value. That said, I am not going to argue with anyone who says they have never had a complaint about them- the person being complained about is rarely the first one to hear the complaint.

We used torque sticks when I worked in the shop at Sears a few years back. It depended on the gun you used, some would undertighten ALOT. It came to the point that we had to go back after with a torque wrench because they aren't very accurate and we got a few loose wheels that came back!

I usually just used them as an extension for the socket more than anything. I'd would NEVER rely on them as the sole way to torque a lug nut down. No way.

My electric impact wrench is a 110V standard corded tool. It works great and has enough power to take the lug nuts off my wheels. When I put the lug nuts back on, I snug them with the impact wrench and torque them by hand. When I had my Lance camper and if I had a flat tire on the road, I could have used the campers onboard 3400W generator to power the impact wrench.

It's one of my favorites tools also. Besides using it on my truck wheels I use it in my business when building porches to drive 12" lag bolts.

I like my Ingersoll 261 3/4" air wrench. It will remove just about any lug nut. And it doesn't matter whether you have it in forward or reverse. That nut is coming off instantly.
