Read this yesterday. The civilian model should be available in `05. If you want to see the bike in action check out the video at Janes.com:

http://www.janes.com/defence/land_forces/video/m1030m1_diesel_motorbike.shtml

They indicate that it is a single-cylinder engine that can hit 100MPH and gets 170MPG. If they can bump it up to an opposing 4 cylinder I think they have a winner, even if it drops the MPG to 100.

Below is the general information on the motorcycle. If you follow the link you can read more about it. Nice range of fuels this puppy will run:

M1030M1 Diesel Combat Motorcycle

This is no wimpy bike with a converted diesel generator for an engine. This is a high performance enduro bike that will run over 100 mph, revs to 7000 rpm and will climb the proverbial "brick wall"

The engine was designed in part by Dr. Stuart McGuigan of the Royal Military College of Science at Cranfield, UK and has been further developed to it's current performance level by HDT and F1 Engineering

The feasability study and the first concept model was based on the Kawasaki KLR 650 gasoline motorcycle engine, however the production diesel engine is built from the ground up by HDT and F1 Engineering

The engine configuration is a liquid cooled, normally aspirated, 584cc (36 cu in) double overhead cam single with four valves per cylinder. Diesel fuel supply is through a special Fuel Injection unit and single injector developed for the engine by Advanced Diesel Injection of San Diego. It currently develops 34 bhp at 5500 rpm and produces power between 1500 and 7000 rpm

The engine has multi-fuel compatibility and can use;

a) Commercial Diesel Fuels, including low sulfer fuels, such as CARB Diesel

b) NATO Military Spec Diesel Fuel

c) Bio-Diesel

d) Aviation Kerosene including JP4, JP5, JP8, and AVTR

e) Kerosene

This brings up an interesting question. When I was studying for my motorcycle endorsement (Michigan), the manual defined a motorcycle as a gasoline powered 2 or 3 wheel vehicle. So, if it's diesel powered it's not technically a motorcyle and you shouldn't need an endorsement to operate it - right?

I own a '94 KLR650 amongst others and it's not bad at 50+ mpg on gas with a 6 gallon tank. I'd love to have the diesel version the military uses!

I want one. . and a diesel 4 wheeler too, a 4x4 quad diesel would be the coolest thing since sliced bread!

dremelts,

You may have a loophole there. :)

diesel bikes

You know what would really be sweet..... a diesel V twin something along the lines of the old Vinvent Black Shadow or a Harley. Talk about torque!!!

i've been day dreaming of such a thing, like 1200cc V-twin engine diesel in a cruser type of bike would be neat. would be enough to make me want a bike

I swore off bikes after surviving my Beemers.

But today whilst cruising to Lander I got to thinking what a diesel boxer Beemer would be like - sigh!

I think I'm going to check out one of those Kowz when they hit the civilian market. Just for putt-putting around on the backroads of course. :p

Got the diesel 4-wheeler. It is a Polaris Sportsman 4x4. I love it!

What about the BOMBs?

All this raises the obvious question: What kind of BOMBs go good with a diesel motorcycle? If the stock military model can cruise at 80-90MPH, what does a turbo add to that? Then there's the question of what box or chip is best for the bike, the best exhuast, etc. And of course if you modify your diesel bike you have to add gauges. Lot's of `em.

One interesting thing I learned while talking to an old Harley biker was that the big exhaust doesn't necessarily mean more power. It looked like his exhaust system was about 1" at the tail pipe and I asked him about that. He told me that there was a set screw to tune the exhaust by opening or closing a butterfly, and that you either got your power at the low end, high end or spread it across the power band. There was no having the cake and eating it, too...

The exhaust butterfly sounds kinda like a poor mans power valve.

I think polaris discontinued due to lack of enthusiasm. They top out at like 35mph so the sports type didnt like em.

The Polaris ASL 300 All-Surface Loader is three-cylinder, 1. 3 L Caterpillar 3013 diesel engine rated 31. 5 hp. It is built for Polaris by ASV Inc. of Grand Rapids, Minn. I cant find a pic of one of these. I think its a glorified lawn mower.

Can anyone decipher that. It looks like its a cat but who in the hell is asv?

I guess they only do 25mph but it is designed for severe abuse for long term use rather than replacement every few years. Its one of those you buy and keep around for 20 or more years.

I wonder where they got the diesel for the sportsman.

The diesel engine for the Sportsman is made by Fuji Heavy Industries. The same company that makes their gasoline engines. Well built and TOUGH little one popper OHC aluminum engine. Has no bushings, all roller bearings in it.

RPM's and power easily adjusted! :)

Mine runs 40 mph now, but will climb ANYTHING! Lots more low end torque than even my 600. I love both (my 600 and diesel), but would not trade the diesel for anything. It is a truely reliable workhorse... plus the "cool factor" of having a diesel! I get asked all the time "is it REALLY a diesel?" "Did you convert it?" "How do you like it?"

Like it, h3ll... . I LOVE it!!!
