40 S&W
The 40 was developed as a direct result of the famous "Miami shootout" in which about 6 FBI agents got their clock cleaned by two bad guys.
Results were the agents delivered several shots that should have stopped the two BG's, but their 38 special ammo didnt do what it was supposed to do. Furthermore several agents were toting snubby revolvers, which dont help in velocity.
They then ran a bunch of tests and adopted the 10mm and the S&W 1076 pistol.
This was too harsh in the recoil dept for some agents.
S&W was approached to develope a "lite" 10 mm. They had the idea that they could shorten the old 10mm to the point of fitting it into a 9mm size gun, and also have the advantage of a larger capacity.
The 40 S&W was born.
Whenever a major federal agency adopts a new weapon, state and local depts arent far behind. Which is probibally the reason there are more "stops" with the 40 than any other.
Having said this, I prefer either the 45ACP, 38 super, or the 9x23 (38 super on steroids
)
I have by my bedside an old S&W model 19 in 357. Federal 125 gr HP's in it.
This is rated at 98% "one shot stops" if placed properly.
Better than the 45 or the 40.
Got the two dogs outside. The mutt will put on a good show, but that's it.
The german shepherd seems like she'll be happy to protect anything on the property in any way she could.
She's still a puppy.
