Depends on how you were driving it prior. Long haul or short and were you romping on it or not. Check owners manual on deisel shut down time. "Get some gages in that thing man!" LOL!

Its about temp not time , do you have exhaust temp gauge ? - 350* , I think that the gauges are cheaper , but I you are in a hurry then the shut sown control lets you get on your way , so for that I'ld say the lightest conditions - :30-:60 sec. , then up to 3-5 min.

I let mine idle for quite a while before I got gauge installed. It is longer than you want and shorter than you think is about all I can say. To be sure, install a gauge. It is the only way to be sure.

You will need at least one thermocouple installed for the auto shutdown or for the pyrometer gauge. I am a fan of electronics, but not so sure I want to leave my truck running and walk away from it. So I use the pyrometer.

Typically for me in city traffic, running empty and not romping on it, as soon as I back in my driveway I am 300F or below. If I have pulled even the slightest grade, it will be around 400-450F. In that case it takes about 1 minute to cool down to below 300F. If I plan ahead and just idle in 1st or 2nd around the parking lot I will be close to 300F at shutdown, but I may still have to wait a few seconds.

On a warm summer day, sometimes 350F is about as low as I can get or feel like waiting on.

At idle, right after start-up my EGT will go to 250F.
