I purchased a Dodge Ram 2500 4X4 Turbo Diesel, Auto about 10 days ago. I love the truck, etc. but why two different engines? 12 valve for a Manual shift and 24 for Auto. Seems like if the 12 valve was a good engine (I have no doubts that it is), then it should work fine in front of the Automatic.

Can anyone enlighten me as to Dodge's thinking on this issue?

ALL dodge Rams are 24 Valve, stick or Auto, they dont make the 12 Valve anymore, it has been years since they did. Who told you otherwise?

I thought I read that! I guess I was incorrect. As I said, I have a 2001, Auto, Dodge Ram and the badging says "Cummins 24 valve Turbo Diesel. " My friend was looking at a new 2001 at the Dodge Dealer (a manual shift), and his only said "Cummins Tubo Diesel. "

At the time I just thought that reinforced what I thought I already knew. I'm not sure where I (thought) I heard that.

Well, I feel stupid now... guess I'm learning though.

How come his didn't say 24 valve?

People don't see things when they aren't in the "know". The truck has the right emblem,he just didn't see it. I've talked to a few guys that didn't know there was a difference.

The 12 valve was used from 89 to through early 98 models, then in late 98 models through current was the 24 valve

As MikeR pointed out, the engines used from day one up until part way through the 1998 model year were *all* 12 valvers. Beginning with what you see listed on TDR boards as 1998. 5 model year trucks, Dodge began using all 24 valve Cummins engines, and such is still the case today. There is one more, minor distinction. In 2001 model year trucks, Cummins offered what they call the H. O (High Output) model, which is ONLY available withy the 6 speed manual transmission, and was rated at 1o HP and 50 #'s torque more than the "standard" 24 valve engine offered with the auto transmission in 2001 model year trucks.

the p pump

I have to add that although the 98. 5 and up models have the 24 valves, they also have a different fuel injection pump than the 12 valve models. The P7100 injection pump on the 12 valvers is quite a bit larger and noisy too (mechanical injection vs electronic)

I'm not sure if the 12 valve mechanical pump is any noisier than the 24 valve electronic pump!

I owned a 92 Cummins (12) and now my 99 (24). They both generate a bit of noise!

After owning both, I think there are advantages of each.

The HO engine is rated at 10HP more and 45 ft lbs torque more.

HO... 245/505

other. . 235/460
