Why can't I find 4.10 truck?

I am upgrading my 01 CTD 2500 SB to a Silver 03 3500 Laramie DRW LWB HO 6spd and want a 4. 10 gear rear end. I CAN'T FIND IT!



My dealer has searched 5 NW states, (I live in Washington), and has not located anything yet. I want a Silver Laramie package with a High Output Cummins and the 6 speed transmission all throwing power through the 4. 10 but they seem to be as scarce as hens teeth. I have located several trucks equiped with everything but the 4. 10 gears. Kind of frustrating since I'd love to have it RIGHT NOW. Nevertheless I did the mature thing and ordered the exact package I want. Now comes the difficult part. Waiting.



Is it really so scarce? Why aren't we able to locate one along the Northwest????

Late in the 2001 model year, after production had ceased, we had dealers do regional and national searches for the truck shown in our signature. They found several 3. 54's, but no 4. 10's. We wound up ordering a 2002.



In our case, we needed the 4. 10's to get the 21,500 GCWR since we tow at 21,180 GCW.

Hey Rusty, care to share the ramifications (pun intended!) of what a 3. 54 rear axle ratio and a 4. 10 rear axle ratio, actually translates into in terms of your GCWR and GVWR and general towing figures? I am kind of hazy on the dependencies and math - anyone else, feel free to chime in... .

For our 2002 ETH/DEE, the Dodge ratings are:



3. 54 - 20,000 GCWR



4. 10 - 21,500 GCWR



GVWR's are 10,500 in either case for our 4x2.



If you run the numbers, for a given rear wheel torque/speed, the driveline torque from the pinion gear back to the engine is (3. 54-4. 10)/3. 54, or 15. 8% lower with the 4. 10's than with the 3. 54's. Of course, the driveline and engine RPM's are 15. 8% higher.

I found just the opposite on my search. I wanted 3:54 and all I could find was 4:10 So guess what I got. I guess it just depends at what time and what place you're looking. If the new 03's had Dana's I'd swap with ya .

Why not just contact a place like Reider Racing and buy a set of 4. 10's and install them yourself. It would be alot easier than trying to find something you can not. Gear sets for Dana 80's can be had from 3. 31 to 5. 38 for those who have to have those realllly tall tires... ... ... ... ... Andy

I wouldnt recommend buying and installing gears yourself,unless you are experienced in this area. Your money would be well spent for professional installation,IMO. If the pinion depth,backlash or preload is wrong,you will regret ever doing it yourself. By the time you realize there is a problem the gears may be ruined. Also the Dana 80 has a 3 and 4 series carrier,all 3. 73 and down use one,and 4. 10 and up use another. I swapped them on a few trucks,the dana 70 swaps are much easier,due to the carrier not needing to be changed. I may be doing 3. 73 in my 2000 2500 as soon as it warms up unless I find a similar truck (2000- early 2001)to swap to 3. 54.
