While a prefilter for a pusher pump is a good idea... I dont think that any type of mesh or screen filter is going to do anyone anygood. The mesh fabric screen that surrounds the pickup inlet in the tank is probably more "fine" than any inline metal screen fuel filter you could buy. I dont know the micron rating but the mesh is very very fine and should not allow debris to pass. I'd say from the looks of it it should be at least 40 micron or better. I have 20/20 vision and cannot see the holes in the weave. Kinda reminds me of a thin layer of silk.

I think that if a person were to install a prefilter... a 30-40 micron filter/water seperator is the way to go. I believe moisture in the fuel is hard on lift pumps since it passes through the motor and bushings. I'd personally stay away from the metal mesh screens and get a real filter/water seperator combo unit. FWIW

i know that i need to install a push pump but have been putting it off for to long and am finally getting ready to it his weekend, my question is this, what is the best pump to buy, is there any advantage to running a higher psi pump (more then 7 psi), where should i mount the fuel pressure gauge, before or after the lp? i figured that the second pump would take up any slack from the lp so should i just watch that one?

a local diesel mech. told me that running a qt. of a. t. f. in every tank would help up the lubricating property of the fuel, as well as adding to the darkness of the smoke:D please let me know what u think:confused:

No way would I run ATF.

I run John Deere or PowerService additive--whichever is handy.

I prefer the JD because it is $5 per 100 gallons and easy to find. (I'm finding JD dealers in every town. )

There's a big ole thread on additives.

On the pressure, anything over zero is good, but the Bosch fellers say don't put more than 15 psi to the VP44 inlet.
