Which Truck Is Best?

Alright all you dodge cummins freaks--- here's your chance... You have all the right to brag and boast you want.

Why should I buy a Dodge cummins? Why not a Ford Powerstroke, or a Cheve diesel?

I can point out many faults with dodges-- killer dowel pin problems, notorious paint jobs, fuel filters placed where only an anorexic baby's hands can reach them...

So why are the dodge's really worth it? Thanks all:cool:

I don't consider myself a "freak" but:

1. CUMMINS!!!!! The name speaks for itself.

2. On my third truck, all have been very reliable. Engines have been faultless. Just a few minor issues such as wiper motor.

3. Paint problems??? not me.

4. Tough. I travel on some of the worst roads in the country in the coldest parts in the country. If something is going to break, most likely I will break it.

5. Did I say CUMMINS

CUMMINS, CUMMINS, CUMMINS

On my second one,

1st one was good, a few problems, two to be exact, but fixed by the dealer and 225,000 miles later I got the second one. 2nd one is great. Neither have let me down, ecspecial when it counts.

"if I have to explain it, your just not gona' get it. " :D

just messin'

D9, if someone has to "talk you into something" it probably wasn't right for you to begin with! You can find fault with very brand/model of vehicle known to man! You should consider your needs first. Some need four real doors and a real back seat. Some need a short bed dually. Some need to have what everybody else has. Everything I have mentioned, Dodge does not really provide. However, there are something like 25,000 of us here that own Dodges. If you buy a Ford or Dodge, you have the option of parts and out of warranty service somewhere besides a dealer.

In the end, you need to be happy with your decision. I don't need to be happy with, 'cause it won't cost me a dime of money or a minute of my time.

And that is my . 02 cents worth

ronco

I personally think that the style of the Dodge second generation trucks look really sharp! The fact that it's wrapped around the Cummins diesel is bonus. I usually do not consider looks for my decision making, but this was the exception. I liked the looks of this truck since it was introduced. I do not want to offend 3rd generation folk, but I do not care for the new looks at all. Call me old fashioned (or an ole' fart) but I'd take a 1st generation over the new ones any day. Give me a live axle up front on 4WD's anytime. My only recommendation for ANY diesel is to go with a manual transmission.

EDIT: As with Dodge trucks, so do others have thier faults. Just check out some of the threads on other sites (as some have linked here on TDR) and you'll see. Either you are a diehard for a particular brand or you'll have done the reseach to come to your decision.

Go drive all three brands

and see what floats your boat if it ain't a Dodge so be it. Not everyone was ment to drive a Dodge heck some shouldn't be driving trucks at all. Sounds like you have done some research so you know the faults/ Positives do that will all the brands so you are not suprised by the trouble the could be and see what you come up with.

Good Luck with your decision

Craig

Now that I drive a 98 F450 at work (I had a 92 12 valve Cummins, oldest in the fleet) it is a real joy to climb into the Dodge at the end of the day. The fastest thing on the Ford is the fuel guage. It is redlined 95% of the time. The best thing about driving the Ford (besides a cup holder) is knowing I made the right decision buying the Dodge CTD. This Ford has been in the shop numerous times for injectors, clutches and trans. problems. In the 9 years I drove the cummins it went through 2 automatic transmissions and brakes every 15K. I will take the Cummins anytime over the competition.

d9, by all means,dont waste your time with a Dodge,you should buy a 6. 0 powerstroke:D . ,but if you want smooth ride,and excellent steering,buy a GM/duramax.

Notorious Paint Problem??

Hmmm - I'm on my third, and I've never been aware that Dodge had a "Notorious" paint issue. Here and there, I've heard of people with bad paint, but never anything such as the GM problem of the early 90's... .

The decision for me came down to overall value. I got everything I wanted for less up-front money, and I believe less re-curring cost (MPG, Filters, etc). My long term dream was to have a Ford Crew Cab, but when it came down to putting my money on the table, I just couldnt justify the higher cost of Ford. Trust me, I looked hard for reasons to not buy the Dodge. When I came home with my Cummins, I was happy with my decision. Everyday since then, I have found more and more reasons to be elated with my decision (that tells me that I didnt really know that much about the new dodge/cummins)

1. Cummins

2. Have no trouble with the paint or access to the fuel filter (and I'm 6'6" tall w/big hands)

3. Lots of things are generally easier to work on (space-wise)

I have owned 2 Fords, still have one. Before I bought the Dodge I was mostly looking for a pre-'99 250 or 350 w/PSD. Unable to find what I was looking for, that I could afford or was closer than 400 miles, I started to look for a 2500 or 3500 w/Cummins. Found one close by.

I didn't even consider any GM trucks. I have used several, and was never happy with any of them. Had mostly to do with the 4x4's that use the TLA, or the guttless wonder, the 6. 2L.

Some of the other reasons that I went with Dodge were parts avaiability (engine), a dealer that others I know really liked and were treated well, looks, cab layout, previous experience with the gas trucks ('78 and several '94-'98 vintage), better ride (back told me so  ), one less head to pull if it becomes necessary, far the most part easier engine maintance.

I have almost nothing to complain about with this truck vs. my last trucks. Not real fond of the auto in this or my other truck, miss a man. transmission :( .

I have had MUCH less to fix on this truck and it has many more miles than 3 of my other previos trucks.

After having this truck for almost 1 1/2yrs. , it is still a blast to drive. Plan on keeping it for as long as I can. Couldn't say that with my others.

This truck is a mule, it yawns pulling anything I have had behind it (up to a 12k load so far. The Cummins has alot of guts. Doesn't have to labor at all.

To sum it up, if I ever get a different truck, it WILL be another Dodge/Cummins.

Sorry for being long-winded.

I have never owned any other brand of vehicle than Chrysler, Dodge or Plymouth.

I have had exceptionally good service from all of them, be it my beater 78 D150 or my K-cars or derivatives of them, my 60's mopars (have had several), or my Dodge w/Cummins.

I love the Cummins, but if it came in a Ford, I would drive a turbocharged slant six. I am 100% brand loyal, and have NEVER had any reason not to be. They have always been better than thier comparable brand-X-mobiles.

What else can I say? I'd rather walk than switch.

That is good advise Craig. Not everyone should drive a Dodge CTD.

unbiased opinions

Thank you all so much for your replies, however biased they might be. Still though in search of more facts and hard data. Snow man, you're the only one so far who has recommended getting a Ford -- were you kidding? What's your reasoning?

Ronco-- no one has to talk me into getting a CTD. --I think you all are right-- CUMMINS:D :D :D speaks for itself. My question is whether or not I can be talked into getting a brand other than a dodge. It's been tough searching for what I want in a Dodge (1st or 2nd gen, long box, 5spd).

The main challenge is finding that 5 spd. I guess their either just more rare than the autos, or whoever has a 5spd wont let it go. Actually-- that seems to be the case for CTD's -- they're not being turned over like the Fords and Cheves-- and that, in itself, might say it all!!!

Csevers-- you do have good advice. Keep researching. Are there any other Ford or GM diesel truck boards as informed as this one?

Thanks again for all of your posts. In the end, its probably not so much what you drive but how you drive it! (now lets see who the real dodge CTD really are)

www.dieselstop.com is the Ford website I can never remeber the Chevy site some one will have that I read the ford site also for some reason but not the chevy one? go figure. Anything made by man is not perfect some things worse than others. If buying used check out the trucks real close it would scare the hell out of me to buy a used truck with all the things people do to there trucks ( I am no different) some mods done well some hacked.

Craig

Yes,it was a joke. I wont try to convince you to buy a Dodge, you shouldnt need anyone swaying you. If the Cummins engine alone isnt enough to sway you, then maybe a brand F or GM is your truck. I know I have the best under my hood, even if i had to fix the trans myself, and it dont ride quite as nice as a GM,they dont have the mighty Cummins under their hood. If you need a true crew cab, look elsewhere also. I do not regret buying my Dodge one bit,if I buy another truck it will likely be another Dodge/Cummins.

You can see what I drive by looking at my signature. I bought it because of its personality and good looks. I also liked the idea that it was very durable and economical. Now if you could find a women that had all of these qualities you would beg her to marry you. So I bought the truck and have no regrets :D

Now buying a used truck is like marrying an older women. In both cases you need to ask a lot of questions and take them on several test drives. Good luck.
