OK OK just catching up here. I love these things, but as a city boy (not for too much longer) only fantasy to me. As a kid there were plenty of places to get lost around here, but not anymore. In any event it was always illegal to run happy wheels anywhere in NYC, you were always taking a chance.
SOOOO my questions are; This appears to be a sanctioned thing up there, so where do you go? I see a tag on the front- is that a reggie? I see Rotax which is Bombadger (our joking pronunciation) and that usually means a screaming animal 2 stroke- what's exactly for power? Describe the powertrain- Quad ATV, or more like a Gator?
It's like a Quad on steroids. It really reminds of the CJ-3A that I roamed the woods with in my youth but with brakes that really do work.
Car like seating position, incredible handling. Not so tiring as straddling a gas tank for hours on end. It has an 800CC Rotax, ashamed to say that I don't know what the horsepower is yet. I will use the same designation that Rolls Royce used when asked for horsepower figures which is "Adequate"........Seth's Can Am has the 1000CC power plant but I don't know why you would ever need more that what the 800CC offers. It's all the power that I would ever want. Overloaded as it is with the rear seat kit, 2 adults in front, two grandsons in the rear seat, a dog and a full cooler strapped on the tail gate it will still go like a scared rabbit.
CVT belt driven transmission with high and low range. Select-able four wheel drive, but rarely ever need to engage it. Low range 2wd is plenty capable. I will engage the front axle if I am crawling up over a big stump or root, also engage it on rock strewn hill climbs. Other than that it is in 2wd.
Has a "Sport Mode" button that changes the fuel mapping, that smartens it right up when activated. I have been checking fuel mileage, running heavy with a mixture of trail work and open dirt roads at speeds up to 50mph it got 18.5 mpg yesterday with Sport Mode engaged for the entire trip.
Maine has a pretty good trail system, still get the occasional land owner that gets upset with punks abusing the trails.....Some parents seem to buy ATV's as a substitute baby sitter and don't apply any guidance. For the most part everyone is grateful for the trails and don't abuse the privilege.
There are several abandoned rail beds that have been converted to public use trails and ATV's are welcome there as well. One runs from Houlton to Caribou, another runs from Ellsworth to Calais. Going to do the Houlton to Caribou trip this coming weekend if weather permits.
I can get enough use out of it to justify the ownership, no problem. Not to mention the snow that it is going to plow this winter.
