Detension or remove the drive belt and check the idler pulley bearings. They may be on their way out and are misaligning the pulley. This happened to my neighbour's '92 W250 with only 95,000 km <60,000 miles on it.

Had a similar problem three years ago on my 89. I kept hearing a ringing noise from the alternator fan, king of like a repetitave "KACHING" noise. The problem was the rear bearing in the alternator was worn as well as the housing it sets in. I took the alternator to a shop to have the bearing replaced, but it only lasted three months before the alternator quit working. 179. 00 bucks and a new (remanufactured)alternator solved this problem.
