Why is the mileage so poor for the New Liberty??

A little bit of smoke.

Caterpillar builds Common rail diesel

You guys were right - I looked at a new liberty and the mileage is only 22 and 27 - pretty poor IMO... ... THat isn't enough to push folks over that direction..... but the additional $$$ was only $1600+

But the turbo charger is interesting... this article states... ...

and the engine is a a Detroit Diesel VM model

"An electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger improves control of boost pressure, reducing emissions and improving full load engine power and torque. The turbocharger features moveable vanes that allow it to act like a small turbocharger under launch conditions. At higher engine speeds it acts like a larger turbocharger. The benefit to customers is enhanced low-end and high-end torque. Meanwhile, a vacuum reservoir improves cold launch performance by allowing the turbo to spool up faster from idle, which minimizes turbo lag. "

I think it's still an mpg improvement over the V6, but the engine, IMO, is sized too small for the weight of a 4x4 vehicle. We had a 2. 4L 4X4 Toyota that got only around 17mpg highway and had no pickup. However, I've read that the CRD Liberty has reasonable get-up-and-go. I'd like to see a 3. 4-3. 6 would diesel.

I would like to see what the MPG is on the real production units will be, not some pre-production beat to h*ll magazine tester. I still think the numbers are a low ball compared to the real world.

I think the 2. 8 is sized fine for the Libby. 295 ft/lbs of torque is nearly what the 4. 7 V8 in the Grand makes. Any more than that and the vehicle would be over powered and possibly squirrelly to drive (by the general public). This isn't supposed to be a replacement for your CTD. :-laf

I would consider a Liberty if I could get a standard Transmission in it. Only comes with the auto. I don't understand why dealers dont give options anymore. First they take away locking hubs and manual transfer cases and now it is near impossible to find a standard with out ordering. I guess this is so the mommys and yuppies can have a free hand to yack on the cell phone! :D

They're only building 5000 of them this year, so therefore they will build to suit the largest market, ie automatic. :{

so would i, but many people like smaller engines for some reason... there was a discussion over at the TDICLUB forums about diesel pickup's and many of them wanted 1/2 ton trucks with diesels [i want this too] but they wanted 4 and 6 cylinder models in the 3-4 liter displacment range... that is way too small for my likes [under powered vehicles use more fuel than over powered ones under similar driving- see them hybrid diesel/electric bus' that get worse fuel economy than the straight diesel models, the powerplant in the hybrids is too small for the size of vehicle in the stop/go application] now, a 1/2 ton truck with a 5-6 liter engine [like that cummins 5. 6 V8 from the tdr rag from a few issues back] would be great...

The Reason Why Its Not Getting Great Mileage Is Because Of The Newer Emission Standards That Are Being Placed On New Diesels. The Cleaner They Make Them Run The Less Fuel Efficent They Become.
