Competition Why no alchaol???

I am not the smartest but there is big tractors that pull that are alchaol, how come nobody has done this in our CTD trucks??? Just my brain wondering???? Or maby who will be the first to do so????

I'd guess out pumps would dry out in a heartbeat with alcohol. There is NO lubrication in that stuff!

From what I've seen, those are gasser engines, ofttimes more than one. FWIW

Those alcohol super stock pulling tractors your refereing to,are diesels coverted to alcohol. but it is a pretty elborate conversion. Complete fuel system is removed,spark plugs put in head in place of injectors (usually a complete after market head is installed ,Indy cylinder head makes them for the International DT series motors). A distributer in put in were injection pump use to be,and a belt drive fuel pump feeding nozzles in the intake manifold similar to the ones in a top hat injection system (like an alcohol funny car). So its really not practical for anything but all out competition ,but not imposible

Its was done a few years back in a light super stock tractor on the east coast with a 5. 9 cummins. I heard it ran pretty well, don't know what happened to it though.

This guestion was just my brain wondering why no one has did it with all the crazey stuff that people are doing in the sled pulling comp. It is just amazing 4-5 years ago there was just some hot trucks out there now there is jaw droppers out there that make you wonder how they do that. I wish I could work with some of these sled guyes just so I can learn more than this little brain nows. So if any body needs some free help in exchange for teaching me more let me know I would love to help. Justin

I may be wrong but i looked into these tractors, and they are useing specially built heads with spark plugs but useing diesel block. correct me if i am wrong

As one who ponders all manner of things, I've thought about doing this with a TDI (they should be cheaper than a Cummins). One would have to:

• find a product that would add sufficient lubricity to methanol or ethanol
• adjust the injection timing of the engine to match the new fuel's ignitability
• let 'er rip

I don't see why this wouldn't work with gasoline, av-gas, racing fuel or any number of other fuels. As long as the amount of 'potential energy' injected into the cylinder is within reasonable bounds, and the fuel is injected so that it ignites 'late enough' to avoid catastrophic engine failure, just about any liquid fuel should be usable, provided it is tweaked to have sufficient lubricity and can be pumped under high pressure to the nozzles.

I read an acticle today about some company that is developing a new fuel for the military that has a percentage of ethanol in it (12% I believe). It wasn't to gain any extra power, but to help with emissions and use a biofuel. They said the engines weren't supposed to require any modification.

The one I have ever seen, was a stock head machined for two spark plugs using two ford 6 cylinder distibutors run from a belt. I think it was Quad turbo.

Volkswagon had direct injected gasoline in the 70's in a few race cars I have a old magazine article detailing it. They used a ve bosch injection pump like a first gens and ran gasoline and alcohol in it... not as nuts as a pulling alcohol "component" tractor but doable. . let me see if i can did it up...
