Been reading several threads about installing the Mag-Hytek cover and I notice that several members choose not to use the friction modifier, or use as little as possible. Whats the advantage to this? Why wouldn't you use the recommended amount?

I got my cover from Geno's this week - that is a nice item. Not looking forward to purchasing 8 quarts of Mopar lube though. $$$!

Some of the fella's myself included like the feel of mild rearend chatter. To me it tells me my LSD is working. Do a search on the subject and you will find many opinions on this. Some like it, some don't:p . Phil

The mag hytech is a great product. Simple, very well made, not cheap, and have to have one. I suggest getting the proper grade fluid from someone other than Mopar. I'm using Amsoil 75w140 (I think that's it) and it's worked fine with no frictin modifier. If you add too much modifier, the clutches slip too mcuh and you don't get the effect of the LSD.

VIC--------Why do you want to buy MOPAR lube? This is a free country and you have lots of choices. I use Mobil Syn. in mine, and its available most everywhere.

The Royal Purple synthetic I use in the rear axle already has friction modifier in its formulation. No additional Mopar friction modifier was required. If the limited slip clutches aren't chattering, don't add friction modifier - the more you use, the less functional the LSD becomes. Use only enough to just stop the chattering.

a comment because maybe i read this too literally, but I believe that you do not choose to add or not add friction modifier, based on whether you add a mag-hytec diff cover or not.

You add or do not add friction modifier based on the type of gear oil added. Some have it already added in there, and others do not. If the gear lube you add does not have it already, and its not synthetic then I would add the recommended amount. If you add synthetic oil and it contains modifier already, then I would not add any unless it is needed. which is determined by test driving the vehicle.

The second rear diff fluid change I did was to Castrol synthetic fluid and I skipped adding the friction modifier and yep -- there was a heck of a lot of chatter. AND - the clutches started slipping abot 20k later. It may be unrelated to not adding the friction modifier but from now on the friction modifier goes in. I believe when the clutch plates chatter an enormous amount of material is removed as opposed to a smooth slip that the modifier allows. I sleep better when I blow $13 on 2 bottles of modifer to 8 qt of oil in my fancy Mag-tech!

If your rear is chattering (pun intended :D) it will not be long before the plates are toast and need replacement imo...

No Aluminum for me

I just spent a few hundred on my other diesel to put a steel skidplate between an aluminum oil pan and road hazards.

I would consider an aluminum cover on the rear, if I needed it, but not on the front. There is too much chance of cracking it open.
