gonzo2 is spot on...

But I just realized last night that at 75K miles I am my own warenty station... 5 years has passed...

I don't know if I should be happy or sad...

Hey, anytime you wonder about the quality of your truck VS another. 237,000 miles. I bought it with 181,000. The only problems I have had are self induced. Cracked intercooler cause I run to high boost. Torque converter slipps... . to much power. Low power... . well checked the fuel... I got critters. Killed the critters, fixed the intercooler, and well I'm saving for a real transmission. But at 237,000 miles and no other problems?

Maybe I'm just lucky. I drive the thing like I stole it and it keeps comming back for more. The other 2 of the big 3 I had I spent more time on my back than on the drivers seat.

hey at 209k ive only replaced the clutch (196k), u-joints (203K), and recently powersteering pump & windshield wiper res.....

my step dads 04 PSD has already ate one engine... im satisfied!

Well I don't deny that toyota builds a good product my question is when you buy a truck as heavy as ours and expect it to do what we do withthem what do you think is going to happen? I Crossed the scales at 28k gross this last fall pulling a 48ft goose and I know I'm working my truck hard all the time. So when toyota decides to make a 3/4 and have as much power in front with as much weight in back will it really be any better? I think that in many ways we are our own worst enemy's by reading all these post's of the few with problems out of the many. We get worried about little possibilites instead of just driving and enjoying what we have. And as for problems I admitte I only have 55k on this cummins and have done nothing but work on it but only in my pathetic needs to change things and nothing as a matter of factory fault. Although in the past 100k I have changed one lift pump on my dads ohh and his shocks. But when you have a heavy duty vehicle and use the ways we do weather that be pullin or driving hard I think we get unbelievable reliabilty considering ! ok ok I'm done babbling Seth

Buy Dodge CTD's Because they Rule the World. Who else makes a bad a$$ driveline with a cummins diesel (industrial strength), New Venture quality trans, Dana 80 and dana 60 axles! I mean come on guys, you can **** and moan about the rest of the subpar accessories but when it come down to it, the stuff that counts (drivetrain)--we got the goods!!!

End of discussion... .

I have been having problems with mine since new and the incompetent mechs oh parden me (re and re boys) they couldn't diagnose excessive steering toe in that cost me over $5000. 00 and with about 8 trips and !!! 4 and a half years and they still can't diagnose the lack of power. The engine has had little power since new flat line for power if I don't have miles of clear road forget it here I read that some one has 30,+++ lbs and he has lots of power :-{} The engine bucking is ruining the rest of the driveline also. Have had enough of CRYSLURRRR ,CUMMMINSSS excrement. If I win the lotto I would paint it yellow and park it in front of their lot. Still working on the problem and for the most getting fingers pointing to the left. If you don't find a problem there can't be any thing to fix right. :-{} I look forward to buying A FORD DIESEL PICKUP.

Gee I guess I am an total nut then, I wanted a Dodge Crew Cab with a Cummins SO BAD that I built one ! Check out my trucks in my readers rigs. As most of us already know, a DC dealer that has a clue about our trucks is as rare as an honest politician  . But you will also find that will this is true of ford and gm when it comes to Diesels and heavier trucks. I always have in hand the TSBs when I go see my DC dealer (on very rare occasions)and have them "conditioned" ;) to to follow my suggestions. As a Dodge Cummins owner you need to be knowledgeable of your truck, so that you can direct their tech. to the problem and fix.

Am I the only one that remembers when having a truck with over 100,000 miles was a worn out clunker ? You know when you did a valve job at 60k and had the transmission done at the same time. I started driving Mopars because they were so cheap to buy in a GM town and got hooked on them with the reliability of the 225 slant six and the 360 V8. Now we are driving around in trucks that 500K miles is expected, and million miles not too unusual to see.

Most of the bombs I have installed have been for my entertainment and not to repair DC defects with the exception of the DSS and FASS. After owning many dodge 1st gens(and some fords & GMs), I find that the Dodge 2nd gen that I now own is a MUCH better product than ANY other truck or car that I have owned or worked on before.

Yea I got it bad, but I have been driving Chrysler products long before it was cool. I enjoy the simple things in life like leaving a black cloud for a tailgater, ruining the day of some kid in a hopped up rice burner when I blow his doors off with a diesel powered dually pickup  .

But that is just my two cents worth

40,000 miles:

New shocks, new tires, 3 separate power seat adjusters, 2 fuel tank senders, transfer case seals, coolant gooseneck gasket, TSB 18-11-99, new brakes all around, track bar, 2 leaky diff gaskets, 1 steering shaft, and now... ... ... (drum roll) power steering/brake pump grenaded and lift pump went TU. Oh, and the dealer ruined my paint with a buffing machine.

Cousins 98. 5 just lost the auto trans, the TPS, and rear main seal at 90,000.

Its all apples and oranges boys, but no one will feed me any crap about this truck being worth what I paid for it. Its a hole in the ground into which I pour money... ... . the only good news is that some of it was covered under warranty. Had the Powerstroke, it was worse than this. Wouldn't go near the Durapuke. I might try one more time on an 04. 5 but at this point not sure what to do.

RR

I just had a lift pump die and strand me out on the road today, but my boss has a 2003 PSD and I tell you what,I would not trade him trucks if he give me cash to boot. I can fix the lift pump very easily. Just imagine owning a 6. 0 Powerstroke when the warranty is gone:--)

I forgot to mention I have owned 3 Fords,4 Chevys,2 Toyotas, and 1 Mazda and my CTD is by far my favorite over any of the others.

You know these types of threads really get on my nerves... half the complaints are on wear and tear items and there is nothing that can be done about that.

As far as I am concerned the constant complainers can jump ship anytime. You won't be missed.

If you really think a furd or chevy will do better for you... then... Go buy a furd or chevy and then you can start complaining about their problems on their website...

Like it was said earlier... "the grass is always greener on the other side" ... till you get there and realize it's a bunch of BS...

:-{} :-{} :-{} :-{} :-{} :-{} :-{}

Cobra, you had to open this can of worms :-{}

Just giving you a hard time.

Sorry to hear about the problems. That kind of thing always baffled me. I always thought "bumper to bumper" meant..... well... ... "bumper to bumper" until I had some alignment issues and was told that alignments were only covered up to 12k  . I also think that the warrentee stuff is left open for interpretation by the dealers. It kind of sucks.

It's already been said but will say it again. The grass is always greener on the other side. I have seen equal problems with the PSD's and DM's, just different. In some ways I like the Fords & GM's but would still buy a Dodge. I have had my share of problems and still like my truck, although it's frustrating at times.

I could say a lot more but I wont. Good Luck.

I really believe the principal that whatever we think or dwell on expands. I have a friend who cannot even drive to Las Vegas (110 miles away) without having somekind of mechanical problem. He twice tore down one of the most reliable models of hanguns there is and then paid a gunsmith to assemble it again. He did this because of preceived problems. The third time he tore it down he sold it to the gun smith as a bag of parts because it was a POS. I studied long and hard before buying a Cummins. I knew that the desinger had to be on to something for a truck that heavy to commonly get 20+ mpg when my 4cyl 4 wheel drive Toyota was getting 22 mpg. When 500,000+ miles is not uncommon that was another sign that this is a superior design.

If you have it in your mind that you will not be happy until you are in a PS or a Duramax do not hesitate further and delay your happiness. Get to your ford or chevy dealer ASAP.

Well...

I don't want to complain but regarding some of the posts here...

I have had the fuel level sending problem, has nothing to do with how hard the truck is run. I lost my lift pump long before I got a camper or started towing. It actually died in NV with nothing but a shell, my wife, and our luggage. Sure not 28K pounds and it was stock, no injectors or boxes.

I just spend the entire weekend just building a bracket for the FASS system to fix a problem my Ford buddy does not have. He was out camping in his truck. I still have to spend another weekend putting in all the fuel lines.

Do the Fords have problems yes. Does it bother me when I have to spend my weekend fixing a problem that DC should have designed for. F&&&ing hell YES.

Like I said I love my truck, and I would not trade a cummins for the world but if I had the time I would put a cummins in a Ford and have the best of both worlds...

:D

later,

This is pretty much the way I feel too, Ira. Ford and Chevy are jokes for the issues they are having. However, when we get into lift pumps, track bars, fuel senders, etc etc its ludicrous Dodge doesn't step up and do something. Some of us are NOT our own warranty stations (my stuff is all packed up pending getting into another house). I am simply frustrated with the lack of attention on Dodge's part.

Cobra, I have 80,000 miles on my 98. 5 24v long bed and have replaced the front pads (stock Dodge) and never touched the rear brake shoes. replaced one LP at 75K miles because of 8 lbs of fuel pressure at idle. Had the computer reflashed twice (recalls) and replaced the batteries and hoses and one belt. installed an Edge box and AFE filter upgraded torque converter and shift kit in transmission just love the truck. Smokes Furds and Dirtymaxs and gets 22. 5 miles per gal. Hope you don't go over to Furd or Cheevys. You won't like them. Best of luck

Have been a complainer for 4.5 years!!!

Have been complaining for that time because when I spent $43,000 I expectted to get what I paid for !!! A truck that worked and wouldn't have to tell re & re boys how to fix a problem from the FACTORY:-{} tHE FIRST ONE WAS steering that oscillated from 10 to 2 o-clock going down the road. And I had to tell them on the third visit what was wrong. The engine has been eating lift pumps since new now on my fifth!!!!! and yes my fuel filter is always clean. The lack of power a loaded welding truck can easly pass me from the intersection:-{} :-{} the bucking from idle to 1250 RPM is very anoying and hard on the drivline. If I don't have three miles of open road to pass someone I am stuck behind some slow driver. The 175 RWHP I have always considered too low from the 235 hp cummins for that is only 20 HP more than my 93 @ 155 from the 160 engine for I only expected about the same since it is suposed to be slighly more efficient. When It ran properly the other week I got 21. 2 mpg and had lots of power to pass someone that was very good for a change. Does anyone have osciliscope reading from there engine. please e-mail me THANKS. By the way my1980 Celicia said it would get 36 mpg I got 40. 6 so I know all about getting very good milage. because of all the driving I have to do.

I wish I could go to Ford Chevy and Dodge, pick out my parts, and have the truck I want. I could come up with many stories about problems I have had with different trucks. Truth is every manufacturer has their problems. Each truck will excel in areas that others won't, and if you don't get the one you need, you are not going to be happy with it. I needed a truck that would get good mileage when it was empty and be able to tow 20K on occasion. I am extremely satisfied with my Dodge, and I would buy another in a second.

P. S. My truck has 170k on it, and it is in great shape. We had two toyotas, and both were worthless before 100k. They might have made good grocery getters, but they made horrible work trucks.

jumping back to the original comment that started this thread.

I'm of the opinion that if a brake shoe or pad should ever seperate as our man discribed, it is defective and should be replaced.

While this has never happened to my truck, it's done so twice on the Dexter axles on my trailer. Each time Dexter ( factory in Elkart not a dealer) replaces all the shoes. I'm told by dexter that this seperation is a defect.

I'd be informing my Dodge dealer that it's not the "wear item" aspect of the pad that's defective, but the laminate.

Also, inform the Dodge rep that if they don't want to replace them, you'll have to choice but to bring it up as a safety issue with the feds.

( Up here just the name "Transport Canada" will get them replaced at once. )

good luck
