wierd noise coming from motor

Guys help answere this for me please, When I start my truck up in morning(cold temp outside and when the truck is cold) It will idle for about 10-20 seconds then start to tick real loud. Loud enough i can hear it over the motor. Its in succession to tick-tick-tick etc. Then it will fade away after about 10-15sec of ticking. It sounds like what you would think a stuck lifter sounds like, (injector???) sound is bothering me as Im just getting ready to dump a couple grand into it dont want any major problems!!!! I started my buddies 06 under same conditions and his doesnt tick like mine. Truck has 8,400 miles on it Edge EZ and a new Dynomax "bullet" muffler as i didnt like the magna-no-flow. I can also here the tick sometimes as I come to stop light and let off throttle or idle down then back on throttle. This is kinda worrying me. It has been going on for about 3-4 weeks now. Doesnt seem to do it if motor is warm then I start it back up. Also does it even if I plug the truck in. Please tell me its something simple an d not internal (i. e. lifter or injector) If its a nozzle Im puttin BIGN'S in Thanks in advance for all your responses.

mine does the same thing every morning or when it has been sitting for a few and gets cold. Folks are saying its normal. Mine goes away after about 20 seconds or so. Sounds like the oil isnt flowing.

Mine does that too, goes away as it gets some temp in it. I think it is rocker clearance that goes away with a little expansion. I you ever pull the rocker cover off one of these you will see the valve train and quickly understand why it would make a noise like that. I let mine warm up for a few minutes in the morning to get the oil flowing and warm the bores.

Thanks guys I hope thats all it is. I hear it up by drivers side wheel well it sounds like when youve blown a header gasket on a small block chevy and its leaking. It just ticks for a wile then goes away. Any more info go ahead and add otherwise Im going to continue to run it like I stole it :-laf

Mine has/was doing that for a while. Just as you described, by the drivers side front wheel housing. Only at idle, and in my case, only when it was warm and not when it was cold. At the suggestion of another TDR member, I dumped a bottle of Seafoam with about a 1/4 tank left. Continued to run my errands and drove it a little harder than I usually do. That same day with just a little less than an 1/8th tank, I added 16 oz. Power Service (white bottle, its cold here) and filled it up. This last tank I have added the P. S. again. The tick has gone away. I will continue to run the P. S. additive as the oil companies continue to drop the sulfur content in the fuel. Keeping everything clean and lubed is cheap insurance. Regardless of what DCX says in the owners manual.

Where do you get that addative?? Ive heard not to use anything with alcohol in it as it is an abrasive!! Is lucas fuel treatment any good?? Ive heard this stuff is good dont know though???

I think I paid about $10-$12 for a gallon of white jug power service at tractor supply. Walmart has it and it can be found at many truck stops and larger fuel stations. At 16 oz. 's per tank, thats about 6 tanks worth. They also have the grey jug for the summer or warmer climates. The grey bottle has a cetane booster too I think. Power service also has a red bottle "911" something or other to un-gel your fuel in an emergency. I keep a bottle of the 911 in my tool box just in case. Gets cold around here. I have a few of the 32 oz. bottles too. I usually only keep one of those in my toolbox. They are about $5-$6 for the smaller bottles. After the small bottle is gone, I refill it from the gallon jug. I ran only a few tanks of the Lucas, three tops. Condition did not get worse, but it did not get better. At $8 a bottle it seems a little expensive. I have also heard that others run Stanadyne, Howes, and Amalagated, and Primrose. I have not had experience with the last four listed, but I have not heard anything bad about them.

I was at Industrial Injection this weekend and Shane strongly recommended Stanadyne products. Industrial Injection rebuilds injectors and injector pumps so I think he knows what he is talking about.



He did say that he had no experience with the Lucas products but that you should run additives in the fuel despite what the factory says. He has seen injector and pump problems increase with the quality of fuel decreasing.
