Wierd noise in 4wd

Hey, when I throw the old girl in 4wd the front end starts squeeking. I don't know exactly where it's comming from... but it sounds a lot like bad shocks, same pitch and that real quick hee-haw type noise, but I know it's not shocks. I don't think it's the t-case, but it could be. I just re-greased all the lubrication points on the front end, no luck. It ussualy doesn't make the noise when I am going in a straight line, but it does every once in a while, and it gets bad when I go to turn or downshift (keep in mind only in 4wd, no noises at all in 2wd). What could it be?

CV Joint on Frt. Driveshaft

Have you checked the CV Joint universal(s) on the Frt Driveshaft?



I had mine rebuild 2 years ago and it sounds like it might be ready for another. They're tough to grease and spend most of the time sitting in one position basking in all the road grime until needed.

If it does it more during turns I'd put my money on a front axle U-joint (the ones you can see between the end of the axle tube and the steering knuckle). They're probably a PITA to change but don't cost that much to replace.

Yeah, check those front axle u-joints.

weird noise

cb check the front drive axle joints by locking the hubs and jack the front axle and put on jackstands. Then turn the wheels either way and rotate thetires by hand and hear if the squeek is right or left side. Good luck jlight

Got any limited slip friction modifier additive in the front differential?

I haven't cracked open the front end. I didn't think that I had limited slip. I looked at my U joints and the front right one has some play in it. But it seems like the noise isn't comming from that spot... odd. I will keep fiddling with it. I can understand why that U joint is a little loose, I froze a bearing on that side this winter doing like 65 on the highway, that was a messy and expenive experience.
