I posted this over @ Diesel stop:

My 2004 Excursion caught fire Sunday out in La. I drove from Atlanta to Baton Rouge to meet some family who where picking up a boat from me to haul back to Tx. We where driving to get something to eat when my Mom in the passenger seat said she smelled electrical. Next thing I notice is smoke and a small flame coming from the driver’s side of hood close to the windshield. I stopped the truck and got out in a panic. Ironically we were right in front of a fire station and two fire fighters where watching the whole thing go down. They ran over and put the fire out with an extinguisher. We immediately pulled the boat off to hook up to my Families tow vehicle to get everything off the road. The fire had burned some type of fluid hose so there was red oil dripping all over the road. The Fire chefs cruiser was hooked up to pull the EX off to the shoulder on some grass in front of the Firehouse. I called my insurance company and explained the situation. Ie. . I'm 550 miles from my home in the middle of moving from Atlanta to Phoenix and the Excursion caught fire. They told me I didn't have towing coverage to get it back home unless I wanted to come out of my own pocket. I opted to have it towed to a local shop for repair and agreed to call the insurance company back to send over a wrecker once I was able to get all my Household goods and personal belongings out of it. Hour goes by and we have pulled everything of any real value out of it since insurance said they would not be responsible for theft of anything. My folks head out to find some tie downs because we can't fit everything in their car and had to load the boat up. I stay and continued pulling my papers and remainder belonging out. I finish and am sitting approx. 100yds from the EX with view of the back of it when a guy drives by and stops to rubber-neck the situation. I'm on my cell phone when I see the guy motion and yell that the cars still on fire. I run over to the truck and see sure enough its caught flame again. I call 911 to report because everyone had left the firehouse. (It’s one of those un-manned firehouses)The police are there in 2 mins and the cop doesn't have an extinguisher. Firefighters showed up 4-5 mins later and rush the trucks out of the fire station to hose it down. At that point the Ex was fully engulfed with flames under the hood. They couldn't get the hood opened because the cable apparently melted. They pry bared the hood and continued to hose it down and then foamed the front floor board area and engine compartment. I called insurance back and explained what happened. They sent the wrecker out to pick it up and towed it to a local yard. I ended up taking a plane-flight home to Atlanta. This could not be the most inopportune time for something like this to happen. My question is has anyone else had an experience with an Excursion catching fire? Some friends of mine said I should contact Ford and see what they would do for me. My thing is I bought the excursion used with 14k miles on it and wonder if Ford would even do anything for me since I wasn't the original owner. For reference the Excursion is a 04 limited 4x4. Does anyone have a Phone contact for Ford?

i don't have a number to ford but if you have access to internet which it appears you do,then do a search on ford motor company and you should be able to get someone at fords number and you can call them. they should be able to put you in the right direction. have you tried looking for a local ford dealer? they would be the best one for help.

Sounds like you're a victim of the cruise control/brake switch shorting problem that has resulted in a recent recall for earlier model (2000-2001) Fords. My understanding is the problem still exists in pre-2000 and post-2001 models. We've had several individuals here in the Houston area lose their vehicles and homes when their Exploders lit up in the garage during the night! :(

Good luck with your insurance company.

Rusty & JW are correct, Ford has a big recall and I believe the Excursion is included. It was big enough to make the NBC Nightly news awhile back. Guy in my shop's F-150 was affected, dealer only unplugged the cruise control brake sensor on the master cyl. Parts on order. Not sure how it would work out, but if the cruise sensor is the cause, Ford should be opening their wallet to take care of you.

They (Ford) should probably be opening their wallet to get you a new Ex! Sorry to hear about your misfortune, hope it all works out for ya,

As I said in my post above, it covered the 2000-2001, but the design is the same all the way from back in the 1990s to well after 2001. There's a LOT of pressure on Ford to expand the recall beyond the 2000-2001 model years.
