For a quality revolver that is hard hitting you would do well to have at least a 44 cal. and a 454 would be even better given the size of the animals in your neck of the woods.



I have 2 choices that go with me anytime I am in the woods, one is a S&W 629 customized by Magnaport Customs and the other is a Freedom Arms model 83 in the 454 caliber.



Garrett makes some very heavy and nasty hitting loads for each of these with a soft point bullet that will punch right on through the critters, these firearms have taken game very large on the hoof with these loads and the comfort while on the belt or a cross draw holster is very reassuring indeed.



The 12 gauge is a great choice as is a heavy caliber lever gun.



The S&W 329 would be an excellent revolver matched to the heavy Garrett loads and the weights would be right, the only disadvantage would be the heavy recoil of the big load in the lightweight revolver.



None of mine are particularly light but when carried on a good gun belt and mated to a quality holster the heft seems to be much less and to me the added weight is worth the added insurance while toting one around all day.

... ... charge for doing this work, and are there only 2 ports??? When I look at the S&W 500 and their massive muzzel brake, it is REALLY effective... ... that said I have a S&W 629 that has their Power Port. . works great but not as effective as the new model... ... . and those nasty Germans who fled to Brazil..... and are making the Taurus has a really neat brake on their Tracker with 8 holes... . I have one in a Titanium 41 Mag with a 6 1/2 " barrel..... to bad they stopped making her - 28 ounces of totally shootable security and fun... . love the 41... .

The 629 has some pretty serious money in the conversion and has turned a great stock snub into an incredible piece, it will always remain my favorite to CCW / OC and shoot.



The mods are now around 1000 bucks for all the work included which is the following:



Combat Mini . 44 Magnum Conversion

A 2 ½" or 3" Conversion only

A custom design for maximum conceal ability, using a Smith & Wesson 29, 629, 25 or 57 or on any N-Frame revolver. Rework grip frame to round butt k-frame; Mag-Na-Port process; Cut and crown barrel; Installation of front double ball detent locking device on the cylinder crane; Millett Rear Sight installed; Baughman front sight installed with Lime Green Colored front sight insert; Combat trigger conversion; Semi-bob hammer; Fine tune action and Velvet Honed Finish.



Mine has also had the trigger, hammer and all screws nickel plated, the cylinder has had the individual cartridge holes numbered, Finger groove Combat Grips Have been slimmed and all springs have been Cryo treated for durability.



The action has been hand worked and is smooth as butter, the single action pull on the trigger breaks like glass and there is no creep or slack whatsoever, single action breaks around 2. 75 lbs. / the double action pull has to be felt to be believed and will cycle through with about 6 to 7 lbs. of pressure applied to it.



The Freedom Arms 83 is pretty much perfection right out of the box and all that has been done to it is a set of Express sights with Gold Bead, a hand polished exterior finish and the Magnaport process on the barrel



Regarding the porting process on my revolvers, Magnaport basically wrote the book on EDM porting and the process works very well even though they only have 1 port on either side of the barrel, they do offer 2 per side on the longer barreled firearms and even have a process they use for the smoothbores.



The results of their porting process reduces the lift of the firearm about 40 percent and the only drawbacks are the added cleaning at the ports and the resulting muzzle blast as it is directed out and up due to the trapezoidal EDM cuts in the barrel.

Like I said, I'm an old fart, I have two . 44 mags (Ruger 7" single action and a S&W Mod 29)... . I've tried carrying both in my back woods treks, but it seems that they have ended up in the truck cab after a few hours of carrying one or the other. Yet the Kit Gun, I have carried all day and not gotten tired from carrying it. Also the CCI shot shell, is my 2nd shell carried and it does a great job when used on a head/eye shot in the Kit Gun. I've also carried the CCI . 44 shot shell in the . 44's when I carried them as well.
