I am the original owner of this truck. It is stock with the exception of a #11 TST plate. The truck has always been able to hit 3000 rpm. This weekend I did a little test to check for de fueling at high rpm. Here are the results. (max boost is 32 psi with # 11 plate)

2750 rpm 32 psi boost

2875 rpm 29 psi

3000 rpm 28 psi

3125 rpm 22 psi

Do you guys and gals think that I would see much of a power improvement if I installed a 3kgsk? As you can see the truck begins to de fuel at about 2800 but its still pulling good up to 3k.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The actual power increase on the top end won't be much, but the overall increase in torque in the lower-mid range is a real nice improvement over stock.

Matt,

You say there would be a low mid range increase in torque. How is this so? Does that mean that in its current set up it is de fueling in low and mid ranges also?

Thanks, Bill

u'll gain on both. U'll gain more top end with a 10 plate and a GOV spring set than the 11 and the gov spring. U do gain mid range too. u start to defuel at around 2200-2300 rpm, or so. U can really tell when pulling a really heavy load. Anyways, the stiffer springs help the truck not to defuel until around 3000 give or take a 100 rpm. so u gain mid-range and top end. the 10 plate is designed to accept a stiffer gov spring and u'll feel more top end with a ten and the gov springs than with an 11. I just found this out the other day through the diesel god. Piers is a genious on this stuff. Looks like we all need to call Piers and order some 10 plates.

MTY- how's your transmission holding up with the gsk? (without the DTT parts if you have already installed them). i'm worried about slipping the lock up clutch with higher fueling beyond 75mph...

actually, i've gone about 5k miles with the stock fuel plate forward and about 10,000 with the ground plate. everything seems sort of fine except for first gear grabbing sometimes (happened ever since i got it). basically i want to out tow my buddy's '94 dodge uphill with the snowmobile trailers on. stock against stocki could do 4mph faster. unless that lock up clutch holds, then i'll wont be going much faster.

how has your transmission been acting? any slipping?

My transmission has always shifted relatively firm... . it was completely rebuilt at 120k after the OD unit took a dump. I bought the truck at 143k (May '01) and it now has 188k miles on it... .

Until recently... . the TCC has been relatively okay. Now when I lay into it the TCC is really hating life.

if anything, the 3k or 4K helps the transmission live longer. U'll be able to rev more in between shifts and its easier on your next gear. it is also easier on clutches as well.

Good point Reb... . more engine rpms will increase line pressure due to the pump spinning faster. Although the valvebody will bleed off any excess pressure beyond what it is set at.....

Matt

Berrigan, I found that the real advantage is not the power but the flexibility in the 3=>4 shift with a load. One dissadvantage that you may have to consider is the extra fuel at high RPM causes higher EGTs. I found that we had to be very careful of plate position if you are going to tow.
