I have an opportunity to buy a pair of nearly new, hardly used group 31 batteries. Will they fit in a third gen? Comparing dimensions from the Exide website, the group 31 is about an inch and a half taller then the factory group 65. They're a little longer too, but I'm more concerend with hood clearance. Arcing is bad.

I don't think the height is a problem, it's the width of the group 31 that's an issue. It will require modification of the factory battery tray.

I have contemplated this on and off for a few years, as I've considered going to a single 2150 amp group 31 battery. If I do so, I would build a custom tray and mount it on the driver side. It might also be possible to cut the sides off the factory tray and modify it.

2 group 31's would be a HUGE cranking capacity!

I'm assuming the battery tray is the same size as a 2nd gen.

I got 2 group 31's in my 1998.

I just heated the sides of the trays then worked them in.

They just needed to be expanded about 1/4". It's a *snug* fit, but there is no real need to saw the trays. Unless that is you have a saw and nothing else to do. :-laf
