1275° Number

In regards to the "magic number," I knew of the meltdown issue with the pistons, but I was under the impression that it was an impeller blade issue as well. Supposedly, at 1275° the tips of the blades begin to glow and over time will actually lose their profile (twist?). I guess this isn't detrimental to the engine, but it will make your turbo less efficient, and also maybe lower the max boost attainable.

Anybody else heard this?

The impeller is also an issue. in fact, I would worry more about the turbo than about the pistons. The impeller blade edges WILL glow at a certain temp (which I don't know). They will still function fine even with a dull glow. You just don't want to get to the point where the properties of the material are starting to change.

Also, keep in mind that when EGT hit 1300, it doesn't mean the impeller will instantly hit 1300 also. These things take time. Since the tranfer of heat is not perfectly efficient (and the impellet is bleeding off heat, the impeller temp and the EGT will never be equal in a steady state-- EGT will always be higher.

So again, don't worry about momentary spike of high EGT. But if you sustain over 1300, you're on your own!!
