I'm just about ready to put my $$$$ on an 03 Laramie loaded. HO 6 spd. w/ 4. 10 rear end. Test drove it this morning and as on previous test drives, it just doesn't seem to have the quick zip my 01 w/ EZ does. Can anyone who has driven both give me an idea if the EZ on an 03 will give me the extra zip? Or could the 4. 10 be dragging it down a bit? Thanks

Here's my take. I've owned an 02 ETH with an EZ and I currently own an 04 ETH bone stock.

the torque output band is narrower for the VP44 engines, hence the limitation for peak HP. EZ fueling on my 02 made it feel more responsive than my stock 04 for two reasons:

1. in the 02, the EZ makes torque come in very quickly at low rpms -- well over 150 ft lbs gain at 1600. so you have a boat load of power off the line

2. The throttle position data is interpreted differently in the 02 and has a natrually very responsive throttle. This has been calmed down considerably in the 04

So an 02/EZ will jump off the line compared to a stock 04. But peak horspower of the 04 is about 60 HP greater than the stock 02, and the EZ/02 will only approach, but probably not exceed, the peak 04 HP. Thats just because peak HP is at high rpm (2900 for the 04).

The 4. 10s give you about 10% more zip at low speeds due to torque multiplication. Definately not dragging you down unless you are trying to achieve a top speed at a high rpm. I would expect the EZ box on the 03 would outperform an EZ/02 combination by a margin that would be easy to detect with your seat-o-pants meter. But, alas, I have not driven a 3rd gen with an EZ.

I put an EZ on my 03 today- woooo

It definitely pegged the seatometer. And I got a couple of boost readings in the 30s, compared with 20 or so max before. I can't imagine that this is going to help my MPG, as I seem to be going faster now..... ;)

On a different topic, how much will this throw the mileage computer off, assuming that I CAN keep my foot out of the firewall?

Doesnt affect the cruise control. Does give a nice seat of the pants improvement and improves towing as well. No worries about egts with the stock hardware. Nice mod.

oops

Yeah, I realized right after I hit reply that it is the injector mod that confuses the cruise control, not the EZ. oops

It sure woke up my standard output engine. Between that and the DTT valve body, the truck is an entirely different animal. I'm seeing boost numbers of 35psi vs the 21-22 it would struggle to make before. It tows much better with the big tires too. I was pretty convinced I would have to swap out my 3. 73's for 4. 10's before, now I think I may be ok with the 3. 73's. That alone made the EZ worth the money.

Now all I need to do is win the lottery so I can afford the whole transmission, and not just the valve body. :)

the ez rocks it made a huge d/f in my truck and just when i am starting to think i need more i turn it off an wow that is how you really tell the d/f. put one on and drive with it for 2 weeks and then turn it off and it is like you are running on 3 cylinders.

the ez is the best mod i have made to my truck and worth every penny.

i am going to stack ez with the edge juice by next spring. for now the ez is more than enough so much so that i am not going to rush out and buy the juice.

i hit 35lbs or boost

so far i have spanked my dads v8 durango, a 98. 5 CTD w/ EZ

Going to have to disagree with that, any time you do a fueling mod you need to worry about EGT's. Even with just the EZ on 4 you can go past the 1200 deg mark, and with "stock" hardware it is even worse. Running a free flow exhaust and cold air intake you can still get over 1200.

Thanks for all the info. DLeno, your explanation makes sense to me. The dealer and I were $1200 apart when I left yesterday so I guess I better see if they softened up overnight. Tim, it's a long bed, so we can haul a lot of beer for the party!!

wyo,

dad got his 300 under invoice plus 1000 customer loyalty, 2500 incintive, 500 farm bureau

he was at 4300 under the invoice price this is what i would shoot for.

i dont know how far under msrp but i am sure he was way under

I have a stock engine with the EZ on level 3 and I've had a tough time hitting 1100 degrees, pre turbo. I did go past 1100 and back off towing up I-70 through Eisenhower but I was already doing 65 mph. I've just never seen the EGT's go that high.

I'm not saying you shouldn't worry about them, though, just that I have a tough time getting them high.

I made the assumption that wyosteve would be following the gauges first commandment of bombing and I shouldnt have done so. I never did get temps that high either. Nor did the few I know in my area that ran one on the stock truck. Doesnt mean everyone wont though so its good that Mopar_Mudder pointed that out.

I just didn't want wyosteve to get the idea that he could slap it on with out guages and not worry about EGT's and then have a problem.

My experience is that running empty it is really no worry untill you hit 80 or so at WOT, which is to fast any way.

Pulling heavy I can go WOT through the gears untill I get around 2200rpm in 5th then it goes over the 1200 mark and I have to shift. Pulling hills in 6th at WOT has been no problem, but if you pull hills in 5th at WOT over about 2300 rpms you have to keep an eye on it a breath the throotle evey now and then.

I also run a 4" exhaust and Scotty III which helps the temps.

parshal, you also have a lower output engine. your EGTs are probably not as apt to go high. In general, though, I am hearing from folks that the stock 03 HOs run hotter than the stock 02 HOs.

It only makes sense: 60 additional HP represents almost 45 kw output, and if the engine is 30% efficient then it generates about 150 kw (more) of power and wastes about 105 kw (more than the 02) in the form of heat. thats if you use all that extra HP of course, but you get the picture. put an EZ box on an 03 and I'd expect a good kick in the pants and high EGTs. It would be like bombing an 02 to 350 HP which usually requires and EZ and injectors. And you wouldnt think of running an 02 at 350 HP w/o and EGT gauge!

When I have done WOT runs I have seen temps +1300 deg F with the EZ on level 3. Gauges are a must. My pyro is located in back side the exhuast manifold where it goes into the turbo. It catches the temps from cyl 4,5,6 and apparently cyl 4 and 6 are the hottest on these engines. I can't wait for a timing box to hopefully bring these temps down. May have to invest in a new turbo.

JeffK is on the MONEY. I have several testing situations with my 04 and the new EDGE (the new edge doesn't offer levels 5 or 6 - not even hidden). Your EGT's will climb quickly with the EDGE and yes you can get up to 1400 if you're trying. The magic number is 2700 rpms. ONce you rev to 2700, you start the multi-firing of each injector. This is somewhat backwards to what most have known and come to love in the diesel community. Especially if you are used to dealing with older Ford PS's. Most would grab a gear and then by getting more rpm's, egt's would go down. Not so with the 3Gs. Keep it in OD and hit the pedal. If you drop into third, and you keep your foot in it - egt's will climb quickly. Your STOCK 3g will grab 1325 towing heavy (8k). I used that as a guide when pulling now.

This being said, I pull 10 - 12mph faster up the same grades, and cruising is a pleasure! I can't wait to see what the Juice and it's timing mods will bring us.

Cheers!:D

PS - with the Edge on level 4 and the mods I have, I able to hit 1300* - and that's pushing it pretty good. I'm sure I can go over, but by how much, I don't know. I'm quite sure that I can reach 1400* when in 3rd.

OOPS - profile needs to be updated...

EZ, GUAGES, 4" all the way with a magnaflow, PRO GUARD 7 with new intake.

Thanks again guys. Yes, I'd do gauges before anything like I did on my 01. I just want to convince myself that the 03 will give that seat of the pants zip that my 01 has, otherwise I'll just keep the 01.
