Will fuel prices dictate you selling your CTD?

Why is diesel so loud?

Saudi Oil/King Fahd

I know many of you have to have a diesel and don't have any choice. My question is for those who do not have to have a CTD. Is there a certain price that fuel could reach that would make you sell your CTD?? I know I came from an old Tacoma that took $25 to fill and got 19 mpg mixed. Now the new Tacomas have much more room, power, and get 22 mpg. They are starting to sound pretty sweet as diesel fuel continues its climb. It's starting to look like the time of $90 fill-ups with a truck that gets an honest 14. 5 mpg are on its way. I personally love my CTD, but I want no part of that. What do you guys think. .

When I traded my 2000 Dodge 2500 on my 2004, I lost $11,000 from what I paid to what I got on a trade (actually, I didn't think that was bad). That much money can buy about 5000 gallons of diesel at the current price. At 18 mpg (my current mpg reading), that is 90,000 miles. At 30 mpg, I would get 150,000 miles out of that 5000 gallons. Question: Do I want to absorb depreciation on my truck for another 60,000 miles... NOPE!! Prices would have to get ridiculous before I let go of my truck!

I had the model that preceeded the Tacoma. It was 4 cylinder, 4x4 and never got better than 18 highway. Had no power. Took it to Montana for a trip and had to do 90 downhill to be able to maintain 35-40 in third by the top of the next hill. That was R15 from Helena to Wolf Creek.

Then we had a GMC 1500 with the 5. 3L. Never saw 15 highway. Our last tankfull, before we got rid of it, was 11. 5 mpg 70% highway, 30% city.

In the end, I think it depends on what you need it for. Myself, I'm happy with the CTD. An Excel spreadsheet of our mileage since we picked up the truck last May, show just over 18 mpg overall. Probably 85% highway, though.

Like scootergmc, we have alternatives: two VW TDI. They get great mileage (50+ highway).

Plus when fuel get really pricey, hopefully bio-diesel will be more readily available, and cheaper. We're also looking seriously at making our own bio-diesel with WVO. Or just running a mix of filtered WVO or waste engne oil to offset the cost of fuel. Recycled engine oil also makes oil changes less painful.

Nope, you cant have half the fun in a gaser.

Go out and try to pin your buddy to the seat of that Tacoma and still get 18-20MPG. go ahead, try, I know I can :D

it took me 3 long years of wanting a CTD but not being able to afford one. then it took me 6 months of searching to find the one i wanted. i dont care if fuel hits 3. 00 a gallon. im keeping it--forever or until it falls apart. my son will probably get the truck (another 5 years to go).

life is too short not to enjoy it.

I'm paying $795 / month in payments (0% 48 months), about $75 / month in insurance, and less than $100 / month in fuel. The price of diesel is the least of my problems. Besides that, if the truck goes, the 5er has to go 1st.

My truck is my only vehicle. I can't afford anyhting else even with the high fuel prices. One tank lasts me 2 weeks of commuting back and forth to work if I don't do anything else. I don't tow much of anything but once in a while. I bought it because I wanted it. I had a Tacoma and it was great but I'll never go back to gas. 3 years and 5 months of payments left and she's all mine!

I won't cash mine in for a gasser. I don't NEED a CTD, as I use mine as a daily driver and only occasionally haul anything... and when I do most of the time an S-10 would suffice.

But I get 24 mpg daily, have fun driving, (most of which is in the passing lane) and I know I won't run out of truck :D

If I get desperate I'll burn heating oil.

I wouldn't think of getting rid of mine. Had a 2002 Tacoma V-6 previously and only got 7 mpg :--) when pulling my boat. That's the day I realized I needed a real truck :D . We have a Civic and a Camry for everyday driving, The CTD only gets about 100 miles per week

I am wondering when the buying public will get really upset about the current fuel prices. I say this due to the fact that the oil companies are laughing all the way to the bank. Sounds like they have inflated the prices to make more money. I am currently spending between 250 and 400 a month on fuel and it's killing me, but the CTD will stay I will never get rid of it. You also have to understand that we have a president that came from oil and will always support their ways.

Not selling any time soon. Then again, we are in ag, and I can't see anything less than a 3/4 ton long bed pulling a 30' gooseneck full of hay... well maybe the TDI could do it if i put the kingpin in the roof. :-laf :-laf

I am surprised at your low fuel mileage running empty.

No way ! I love the Cummins too much!! I think as fuel prices rise I'm going to be driving the E300 more often , as it gets 28-33mpg typically. I can tell you that I really miss my 02 TDI Jetta!! It was like driving for free. I happily sold it to get the CTD, but it sure would be nice to have now!

It wont dictate me selling the truck. It is paid for, and I do need a truck however I do not need to use it as a daily driver . The fuel prices may dictate me buying another vehicle that gets excellent mileage though. The price just isnt there quite yet but if it keeps going the way it has been this time next year my truck may have a smaller friend sitting next to it in the driveway.

Man! After reading this it's no wonder fuel prices are sky high. Apparently most don't see it as a problem, at least not a big problem. It looks like most could care less about the price of fuel and I bet the diesel fuel makers know this. I can understand the 1st and 2nd gen guys who get outstanding mileage, but my 600 doesn't even come close to some of the numbers you guys are posting. I have gotten 18+ on the hwy at about 60 mph, but when you hit town it avgs 12-14 mpg. I'm in town 70% of the time.

Possible, but I don't drive around very much. It is my only vehicle with 3 years of payments left, but in two plus years of owning the truck has less than 25,000 miles. Going to or driving by the pump is still a sore spot. $2. 05/gal
