Will I have a problem running a A/C unit off a EU3000 Honda genset?

OVERDRIVE or NOT WHEN TOWING???????

From the stats on mayberrys website, I should be okay running a rooftop AC with a 3K genset, even on startup. Any opinions/experiences?
I like the Honda for reliability and quiet. I don't see myself needing the AC and micro at the same time, so if I have enough to run the AC and a few lights and TV I should be fine.

Without seeing the numbers on the AC it's hard to say, but I have a feeling you might be cutting it too close and maybe should go with a 5k generator.

I run a Dometic Penguin 11,000 BTU A/C on a built in Onan 2,500 watt genset in our Lance camper. It handles it fine along with the fridge, about 350 watts, and the converter. If I run the microwave, I turn off the compressor on the A/C until the microwave is done.

I have a Generac 4000XL, 4,000 watt, that I use on our 5th wheel and it handles a Dometic Brisk Air 15,000 BTU A/C just fine, but not both A/C units. We have a second Dometic Penguin 13,500 BTU A/C unit in the bedroom. I haven't tried the microwave to see if it will handle both at the same time. Like in the camper, I turn off the A/C compressor first.

To answer your question, it depends on what size A/C you are trying to run and what other appliances are running at the same time. Don't forget to add in the fridge if you are letting it run on 110V AC.

My dad looked at buying the Honda EU3000 for his camp trailer but had the same question. The local dealer lets us take the trailer down there and hook it up to test it. It would run the A/C but if anything else in the camper was on it would throw the breaker on the generator. He bought the Honda EX4500 instead and has never been sorry.

I have the Honda EU3000 and love it. I bought it exclusivly to run my roof top AC because it is so quite. Fellow campers just can not get over how quite it is. If you are standing 10 or 15 feet away you can barly here it. One problem I have encountered is when the AC pump cycles, my TV shuts down, so I just run the TV and microwave off of the inverter. This only happens when the generator is in the fuel save mode, if it is running in normal mode the TV is fine and I can run the microwave at the same time also. I suggest if you go with the EU3000 you take your RV down to the place you are going to buy the generator from and plug into the unit you are going to purchase. I wanted to make sure it run my AC and the first one had problems. If I would have bought that one they would have been my problems. The power of the EX4500 would be much more but I believe the db rate is also.

woohoo, good point nutter. Hadnt considered that one.

I just wanted to add that I run my 13,500 btu roof a/c off my eu3000 w/ power to spare w/ no probs. Very nice unit. Its true that they are quiet compared to other gens, but under a good load, they do still make quite abit of noise. a little loud for a campground IMO. In the boonies, its no prob.

I have an EU3000 and it runs my 13,500 Duo Therm Brisk Air easily. It will even run the microwave at the same time as long as the AC is already started.

Hey guys, I too am looking at portable generators. So far it looks like most everyone likes the EU3000is. I run a 13. 5k BTU roof air and a small refridgerator, microwave, and TV. From what it sounds like as long as I don't run the micro and AC at the same time I will be ok. (I know need to add up the numbers to be sure) I would be looking for quiet and it seems the EU is about as good as it gets. What should I expect to pay for this unit. I want it to run the LQ area of my horse trailer.

The AC unit is a 13. 5k btu. I reckon I would also be running the fridge and possibly the tv at the same time, although I could leave the fridge on gas. It sounds like a few people are able to do what I want to do with this generator. I suppose the best idea would be to find one to plug into and make sure.

Thanks for the replies.

keep in mind that most generators are rated in watts into a resistive load like a light bulb, Moters like in AC units are Inductive load, 1000W of Resistive load is less then the load of starting a 1000W inductive motor. Some generators will show both load statements, check it out.

I have to hop on the "me too" wagon. I'm looking of a generator as well.

We loose power at the house 2 or three times per year. Since we are the last house on the gid we are the last to get the power back. Sometimes it's 5 days waiting.

I have a 5er. My water is from a well. So my plan is to buy a generator that's not too heavy. It must have a Honda engine... I think they make the best small 4 cycle engine. I need to have a hook up at the pump (that pumps the water out of the ground). I plug it to the generator, which is in the truck bed, and I have water. I fill the camper's water tank. Then unplug from the pump, drive to the 5er, and plug the 5er in so it gets power. This would sure beat a hotel room.

Anyone know how much the EU3000 weighs? Is there a web sight where I can read up on it? How about the cost?

Thanks for any info

Just a note of caution. The 3000 is cutting it close if running almost anything else. The age of the A/C makes a huge difference as well. I had an '85 trailer that needed a 5000 to start and run the A/C. I had an '89 that the A/C would run fine initially on a 3000, but later required a 4000 or greater to run it. On my new trailer, I run a 5000 and it runs everything I need, including microwave, as long as compressor is already started.
Age and condition and A/C type make a big difference. The newer a/c's start and run on less electricity.
