2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Will I hurt my rear differential?

Just got flat on my rear passenger side tire (I'm now runnng 285's, originally came with 265's). I want to put my spare tire on which is a 265, so I can run the flat tire over to the tire shop and get it fixed.



Will I hurt my differential by running a 285(rear driver side) on one side and a 265 on the other. ?



I'll probably need drive 10 or 15 miles total to drove the flat off and then go back to pick it up when its done.



I've got a '00 2500 4x4 with limited slip rear differential.

I would pull a front tire and wheel of the same size and put the spare on the front. It is never a good idea to run two different sizes on the rear axle.



Your front axle will not be locked in and no damage will occur.

I've been told that that's a no no. Why don't you take one of the fronts and put it on the back for now? Maybe someone else can veryify this or maybe the short distance won't hurt the dif. This is just what I've been taught since I've been driving?

In an emergency (i. e. getting off a hiway) and as long as it is NOT a limited slip it will not hurt for a short distance (and slow- read: no burnouts. ) The truck will interperet this as if it were going in a constant curve condition. In this case, jebia has a LSD and therefore I would do as the others suggested by swapping fronts as it seems J is in a safe area to do the swaps.

A little off topic but if I have a flat on the duals will the lugs

285 spare

Also, if you can find an old 285 tire it will fit in the stock spare location. This way, you won't have to change two tires whenever you get a flat on the back.



Saves time and all the funny looks people give you when you're taking off a good tire on the front.

BTW carry a piece of 4x4 in the bed or under the seat. . if it's a outer flat just drive on the 4x4 with your inner and wala up ready to pull it. . or an inner you have a piece O word for the jack to rest on and not go byby in the mud/sand

Last week I finally broke down and purchased a 285-75R 16 spare tire. Yes, it will just BARELY fit but it fits. It was only $98 as I went with the Walmart Liberator AT tires. They are made for Walmart by Michelin. I have already been through the "chinese fire drill" of having a rear tire blow out and have a stock size spare tire. Tires never get flats when it is convienient. ALWAYS at the WORST times. Get the correct size spare and you will not have to worry about moving a front tire to the rear if you have a rear flat.

The last time I had a flat, my friend was driving down I-35. 2 of the 3 of us were drunk at 2:30am and it was poring rain. The worst part is we had a Ford F-150 with the chrome lug caps. Everytime we got a lug nut off the chrome cap would stick in the wrench. We had a stubby screwdriver and the trailer hitch to pound/pry the caps out. One drunk would hold the screwdriver, the other carefully would try and pound on it... ... you do the math... ... 2 brused thumbs later and a wrecked cowboy hat we were on the way!
