Competition Will it explode? Sled pull Question.

There is a stock diesel pickup pull at the county fair next weekend and I was wondering if a 06 bone stock diesel automatic 4x4 in the low side of the transfer case will hold together or will the transmission slip? I have a smarty jr. but for safety sake would leave it on stock. I am sure someone has tried this, just wondered what the outcome was. I do not want to burn up the transmission for 15 seconds of fun. :-laf

Are you taking a big chance at breaking something important... . yes.



Do I personally think that you will break something..... yes. Explanation... if you pull once and don't break anything, you'll do it again and again until you do.



Would I do it with one of my trucks stock..... No. I would probably purpose build it for sled pulling in mind first, then go out and break it. Either way, if you sled pull, drag race, or get in to the dyno competitions seriously, you will break something eventually. We all have and probably will again.

Aw, come on, it's just one pull! Yes I can here it already... . I know a manual is better, but mine is a auto, and I really want to try it!

IMHO, I would never enter into a competitive event with a vehicle that I even had a little bit of concern about breaking something. Especially if it's your daily driver.

Believe me, in my younger days, drag racing my daily driver 'hot rod', I got myself in bad situations many times. Like, no way to get home, or to work. Now how do I make the money to fix the car? It always put a very sick feeling in my stomach, as I was being towed off the racetrack.

When the competetive adrenaline kicked in, my only concideration was winning the next race, and I was only too willing to stretch the limits.

Like jgillott said in the prev. post, purpose build something for that, then go out and have fun.

When i had my 03, all i had done was intake and exhuast. It was a bone stock auto other than said improvements. Was it fun yes, was it worth it no. If it's your first hook than by all means, get your feet wet, but be warned, it's a slippery slope from there. You'll catch the fever and before you know it, your stock truck turns into frankenstien. Will you brake anything, well that's a crap shoot. The fact that you're showing concern tells me it's not worth it. My advice would be to go and WATCH the pulls, have fun, and talk to the guys and gals running similar trucks and talk to them about their upgrades. Talk to the guys and gals who DO break and find out what they DIDN'T do. Every event that i've been to pulls, and all the people i've talked to have been AWESOME! I've never seen a sport with so many people willing to help and give advice. I'm sure there are a handfull of people, including myself that have pulled and never broke on there stock configurations. I had 4 hooks on my stock 03 and never had a problem, 3 on the 04. 5 with no problems... but that's why i don't do it anymore:-laf

Your transfer case is not going to explode, you don't have enough power to make it explode. I run the same transfer case in my sled pulling truck and it has held up great. These 271 cases are virtually bulletproof IMO.

You definately take a chance hurting the stock transmission though. Even in low range those clutches and that converter are gonna be cryin'.

Sled pulling is brutal, it's what trucks are meant to do!:-laf

OK, hooked it up Sat. night, 1st place by 20 feet! I put the Smarty Jr. on 40hp, and let her fly. Low range, low gear, she stood on the governor the whole way down the track. It was a really sticky clay track and at the end of the pull the tires were not spinning so I let out of the throttle as soon as the sled slowed me down. That was fun!! Any body have a old 12 valve 4x4 5 speed for sale?

Sounds like your clutch is toast, especially if your tires were not spinning at the end... ...

I live in Tallahassee,Florida and would love to go to a pull event to watch. if you guys know of one anywhere close to me p. m. me. I use to go to tractor/truck pulls when I was a kid in Havana, Florida all the time and loved it.
