Anyone know if you can use a laptop to monitor engine functions like a scan tool. Where do you find programs like this (if they exist). Will the cummins program work or is it only for Palm computers? I'd like to be able to moniter engine sensors in a real time format.

I've just ordered the one from Alex Peper to see what it does. If you search the archives, several members have his program, you might email them and get their impression. Once I've had mine for a while, I'll try to make a posting/review of what it can do for us. BTW, you can download the software free, it's the cable that he's selling -- make your own if you're handy (I am, but don't have that much free time).

Hey Zach

I just ordered my software and cables yesterday YES INDEED we can monitor lots of stuff and more to come with the new LAW that manufactures must release their secrets on "code software" as per Commiefornia CARB. Its now law... . and all these Auto makers must coff-up the codes!

Check out www.ghg.net/dharrison/odbscan.html

I called and spoke with the main engeener on Tuesday of this last week and received lots of great info on our OBD-II managed format systems... I think you'll find its inexpensive...

I can hardly wait to get mine... :D

Darn-it I just clicked the link and it doesn't work... the Company is R&D Harrison their located in TX... Phone number 281-485-7107.

The lady answering the phone will have the correct web-address.

sorry

Mick,

Would you post what the response is from Harrisson?

I also have Alex Peper's OBD-2 software and would like to know how they compare.

Thanks

Generic

You must realize that the auto manufacturers are only obligated to give you Generic Data. This is very, very limited scan data information. They are not required by any law to give proprietory scan data to anyone other than their Dealer network who have access to a DRB III Scanner. If you want to see all of the approximately 300 pieces of Scan tool data you will need to get your hands on a DRB III. They are not cheap !!

There is a company EASE Diagnostics who has a really great lap top program that will give you alot of scan data, but, it is not a cheap program. Go to www.EASEdiagnostics.com

Good Luck,

During my conversation with Dan Harrison he stated that the LAW has been changed and in two to four months we will see the software up-grades for those of us who have operational registered software. This has been handed down by the courts of Kalifornia and Dan will provide the added enhancements to his product... ... ... . this will become very interesting;)

William

Fuzz,

I'll let you know what I hear back. No response as of yet.

I forget who asked for a pinout on the cable. It's not that simple. There is a convertor box in-line with the comm cable. CAT 5 on one side and serial on the other. You are paying for the cables AND the convertor box.

Mick

Fuzz,

Here's Dan's reply.....

Mick

I missed your email until today, I apologize for the lateness of this

response. You will get

All trouble codes

Calculated Load

Manifold Pressure

Coolant Temp

Throttle Position

RPM

Speed

Sincerely

Dan Harrison

Mick

Thanks Mick,

Thanks for the info on the Harrison version. Not sure but it seems that Alex's software does the same, except no Palm interface.

thanks again

I've called Dan Harrison's office this morning and he will be returning my call today. I will once again ask him to confirm that the "Question" of Law change regarding the info that we all want is in the works "for real". I know that the "GENERIC" stuff is there for anyone at this time but again,,,, I want the real "poop" as this will change everything and open the doors for design manufacturers as well as those who are advanced shade tree mechanics. I want to be my "OWN WARRANTY STATION" on the cutting edge... . as many others want also. :D

William

I'd like to have scan and UPDATE software. The abilty to clear fault codes would be nice. I set one installing the PEC and would like to clear it. I doesn't hurn anything, I just know its there.

William, Thanks!!

Mark,

The currently available scan tools for laptops DOES allow you to interrogate faults AND reset them. I know my Alex Peper OBD-II SCAN works and dan Harrison says his has that capability too.

Mick

Oo. The Answer is YES!

Just got off the phone with Dan Harrison it seems Gov. Red (Gray) Davis of Kalifornia signed Senate Bill 1146 or 1147 that requires Mfgrs of Motor Driven devices to release the "proprietary" codes and information to the public "IF THEY WANT TO SELL IN THE STATE OF KALIFORNIA".

All of them are now in motion to comply. Volvo is balking... who cares anyway... .

We will see this in a few months. Dan has shared with me that a couple of Cummins customers that he works with may very well act as "references" to our courious disspossition as TDR members to go to their e-mail addresses and request their "testimonial" as to the power of the "software" that Dan's company is providing them at this time and the furture enhancements that will be comming down the pipeline. He will contact me as soon as they give permission to do so.

I don't like Govt. telling companies "how they will" provide information and "how much" but in this case (for our sake) I'm sorta pleased. If Dodge had first rate Tech's in every location perhaps it would not have been such an issue... ... . but I prefer doing things for myself no matter what.....

Soooo this could lead to some wonderfull things... . perhaps we will load and enable our own "high idle with 3 cylinder run" and have it happen at 32 degrees or 37 for that matter!

Life is good (or getting better) anyways... ... . :p

More info!

I want to know how the Harrison & Peper products compare, too. Can we get all the Cummins & DC info? Resetting TCs sounds mighty good! My latest fiasco with the local dealer scared me.

I'm now a believer (I am my own warranty station). :)

I am very interested in this as I have an extra lap top sitting on my desk waiting. So I have to wait four months for the good stuff. Well summer is a good time to do computer bombing. .

Sounds like we might get some good info here. I do have to say that Alex Peper has been very good about answering questions on his product. I am going to Email him today and ask about this change in the law to see if he is going to update his program to take advantage of it.
