What exactly is becoming available due to the new law?

there is already the ability to see performance data, see and reset fault codes, and view engine parameters.

What exactly is to ba gained? More is always better.

I have a question for those that have the Pepper OBD-2 software. What kind of readings do you get on the TPS? Mine 12% at idle and 75% WOT.

Stake,

Mine too. I asked Alex about that but his only reply was "I display all standard information". I had hoped he would work with us to improve the data we get out of our trucks. Guess not.

It DOES work great for reading/reseting trouble codes but I guess we're 'data junkies' and need all the data we can find.

ODB-II Cable

Does any body know the pin-out for the cables, I would like to build my own, or have BlackBox make one for me:confused: Also, has any body had any bad things happen with this software:confused: I would appreciate any help, Thanks. :-laf

I just got my cable from Alex Peper the other day. It's a serial cable into a black box, and cat5 out to an adapter for the OBD-2 jack. Inside the black box is a circuit board with a dozen or so components on it. His website also has kit pricing, as well as pricing on the CPU that's on the circuit board.

It's not as simple as hooking up a serial connector at one end, and an OBD-2 plug at the other -- but if you've got the time and the skills, you might save $50 or $60 by making your own. Assuming you don't vershmeckle the wiring and fry some $1200 Dodge computer in the process.

RE: OBD-2

As Dan Harrison of Harison R&D told me a customer of his named Mike Perkins may act as a reference on behalf of Harrison R&D.

He did agree to do so... . I e-mailed him at

-- email address removed --

His response was only generic and would attest to the functional aspects of the "presently" available softwear. The operation is very much like Alex Pepers OBD-2 system set up. He knows nothing of the furture enhancements that Dan Harrison has eluded to.

I have not received my OBD-2 scan set up yet.

At this point in time I guess we shall wait and see what develops. It certainly won't hurt to become familiar with these software system providers and at least we "can" clear locked codes with either one.

I trust that future developments will unfold and bring us all to the technical levels that we desire.

I don't care to go to a "dealer" on bended knee and have to train them to do a job that they should already know.

Are you listening DC?;)

Using Harrison OBD-2 scan

Anybody actually using Dan Harrison's scan tool on the Cummins? His email to me stated that his setup now covers the CTD but I got the impression that this was a recent development. I'm particularly concerned with accessing both the ECM and the PCM, and resetting codes on both.

Does it work?

I just can't give up!

Anybody who was on this thread actually using these scan tools? I really want to know before I give up some $$.

C'mon guys. Somebody must be using these tools.

Harrison OBDII Scantool

This hookup does work, but not as well as I would like. You can read and erase codes. I wanted to use it with my laptop, but it will not work because my laptop, like many newer units, does not have a serial port. I bought a serial to USB adapter, which works for other things that normally connect to a serial port. It will not work with Harrison's program. I have to run a 65' cable from the driveway to the nearest computer to connect to a serial port.

How about an adapter to link from the 9 pin serial D shell connector to the OBDII 16 way on board test port under the dash  ? ?

Where can I get an adapter for this connection??

FAllen,

You are missing the point... . you need the software and hte convertor box to actually connect to any OBD-II compliant vehicle.

I use Alex Pepper's software and it works with all of my antique and not so antique portable PC's.

Did you actually read all the posts in this thread?

I must have missed the 'hte box'.

Just not sure on the physical connections.

I assume you can attach the hte box to the 16 way under dash connector, then a serial cable from your laptop to the hte box?

Is this correct?

Would this be the same for a connection with a handheld such as the Palm? Palm would connect to the hte box and the box to the under dash OBD 16 way connector?

I wish I could use it, but my truck is a 94.

I built a similar setup for BOMBing my Mitsubishi rear projection TV. Works great! Now able to adjust color and other locked out parameters with my laptop.

Can you access both the ECM & PCM? I've got a Palm III so I won't have to use the laptop (hate 'em).

cbconway, Yes you can switch between the 2 computers.

SEmerson, No you can only monitor data and erase codes.
