I had my muffler and resonator cut off a few months ago. Got a nasty drone right at 2000 rpm. I was getting ready to try some of the posted suggestions for eliminating it. Before I had time to mess with it I made a trip from Omaha to CA and back with my trailer. Suddenly the drone was gone, don't know if it was the heat from pulling the mountains or just the miles but it sorted itself out. So you can see, there are no real answers to this dilema, everyone seems to have a different experience. Good luck with yours.

When did peolple start calling these things resonators? I haven't ever seen any reference to a resonator in dodge, or cummins literature. What I have seen is reference to oxidation catalysts. It seems to me that they are cats of a sort that happen to have certain flow characteristics that may or may not appeal to the ear. I know we've been over this once before with evidence showing that they are in fact cats. Does anyone have evidence to show that they are resonators?

Here's at least one link showing the discussion https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum17/HTML/002128.html

Formerly owning a PSD, drone was a BIG problem with all available aftermarket exhaust systems. The people @ http://www.epiflex can help this a bunch. Or you can go the big rig type of flex for a not quite as good fix, but much less cost.

Cullyguy,
Thanks a lot for this tip! I followed up on your post today and spoke do Rich at epiflex. He seems to have done a lot of research on this. He says that Ford calls this resonance "4th order engine vibration"?! Rich says his product allows the pipe to flex slightly just below the downpipe, which eliminates this particular noise. The pieces are a little bit more pricey than just using stainless flexpipe, but they seem much sturdier.

I might go this route. I have to decide first, though, whether I want to go 4" T-T first.

Just had to post this picture this after checking it out on the web (http://www.epiflex.com). This "Epiflex" has been designed to strictly address this "4th order engine vibration" (gotta love that term!). According to Rich there at EPI, Bully Dog has been talking to him about incorporating this thing in their downpipes. Must be something to this concept.

Co-pilot's been complaining about the drone-resonance for some time; I've been hanging tough, pretending it doesn't matter to me, but the noise at cruise and climb is starting to work my last nerve, too. I think I'm gonna try this.

I glanced at a JC Whitney catalog in the grocery store the other day and I believe they are selling the Epiflex. At least the picture looked similar. They had a 3 in. model 16 in. long for about $65.

I believe the largest size I saw on their web site was 3. 5" I. D. Are they going to make a 4" version for our application?

This droning issue is the main reason I havn't changed my exhaust system yet... It seems from past posts, that no matter what system, or configuration is tried, there is droning..... Am I off base here?

I have the 4" Jardine system, turbo back. I had the muffler removed from the stock exhaust. After installing the Jardine system this is what I noticed: Inside the cab is quieter

Turbo spools up faster

Nice deep tone

No Drone

Engine More responsive

4" to 5" SS Tip :D

Great Cutomer service

Drone is back

Any new advice for those of you that have developed exhaust drone at or near 2000 rpms?

I just installed the Jardine 4" and have a Bad drone at 2000 rpms.

Read lots of past threads and nothing conclusive.

Mine almost feels like it starts to vibrate at 2000 on up.

The Jardine fit like a glove. Joints nice and tight, hangers fit great. Did not care for 4 - 5" chrome flared end.

I know everything is very tightly installed. Sounds great upto 2000. I do not want noise. This system is quite, but drone is disappointing. Hate to start cutting it up to try something that will not help.

Will call Jerry (Jardine) to see if he has any ideas.

I am real tempted to install some flex pip below down pipe or just infront of muffler?

Don't want drone? go JRE

CCahill...

I have the JRE 4"system and love it. Ted promised no drone, and there is none at any rpm. I also don't recall ever seeing anyone complain of drone with the JRE.
