I am now pretty much sold on getting a Smarty for my 2006 3500. I also would like a scanner that will work on my other vehicle - 2005 BMW X5. Has anyone used the Smarty as a scan tool for vehicles other than Chrysler?

IDK about the BMW, but other '03-07 5. 9L CTD Dodges it will.

You might try and call or PM Bob Wagner, he will know for sure.

ahh smarty says what years of CUMMINS engines it is compatable with like 03-07. 5 "5. 9" 07. 5- 09 "6. 7" so im pretty sure it only works on the years an motor its designed for... its a programer not a scan tool. i think u can pick up scan tools from auto parts stores that will read trouble code on diffrent vehicles though.

Thanks for all the help. It appears that even though there is OBDII, all vehicles are somewhat different. I have investigated some scan tools and have not found any yet that will work with both the Dodge Cummins and the BMW. AutoEnginuity makes PC software that they say will work with both, but the basic software will only see basic codes and additional software is required to work correctly with either the Dodge Cummins or the BMW. That makes it more expensive than the Smarty and a scan tool for the BMW. Unfortunately, I am getting way over my budget.

I think with both your trucks you can cycle the key 3 times an it will pull up the code were the mile are an then just find out what that code means. There posted some were on this site. I found them for my truck the printed the page so i always had them. then you can buy somethan for your bmw. If you have a pep boys or somethan like that they will scan your car for free just in hope that you will buy the parts from them so you might not need to buy a scanner at all
