I am losing my TDR virginity with this question and first forum topic. I finally gave in and subscribed. I bought my 03 2500 HO a couple of months ago and all I know about diesels is from this site mainly. My question is: Will using an AFE intake raise my egt’s without having an exhaust on the truck? All I have done to the truck is the Edge EZ. My thoughts are. . with the AFE it will suck in more air and have faster turbo spool up. Will this raise the temps at all?

Thanks in advance

The aFe should help to lower EGTs. If you want faster turbo spool up our Turbo Air Guide (TAG) works well for that and a 4" exhaust will also help especially if it is one with an Aeroturbine.

This is taken directly from the Cummins website.

"Does DaimlerChrysler authorize the use of high-flow aftermarket air filters such as K&N with my Cummins engine?

No. DaimlerChrysler and Cummins do not recommend the use of increased flow air filters such as K&N, because they can allow contaminants into the intake that can ruin an engine (scoring the sides of the pistons, etc. )"

Something else to think about besides egt's if you are planning on keeping your truck for awhile

Clayton,

The aFe will lower your EGT's. The turbo spooling up faster is irrelevant because you are still "sucking" more air which results in cooler temps.

As far as warranty denial or any other issue's I will warn you now. Dodge has made reference that certain aftermarket oiled gauze filter do not filter out enough minute particles and they may give you a hassle if an issue arise's later on down the road.

However, if the aFe you bought is the Pro Guard 7 then you should be alright since aFe claims that filter is suppose to be as good as the stock paper element.

What is the difference between:

Afe Maga Cannon

Afe Magnum Force

Afe Pro Guard 7

Are they 3 different kinds or intakes?

As I understand it, the Magnum Force is the intake system itself. I believe the mega cannon is just a filter... like the proguard 7 is just a filter.

I have the entire intake kit, with the proguard7 filter. I like it VERY much. It is supposed to filter out particulate just as well as the stock filter. To my knowledge, it is the ONLY aftermarket filter that can make that claim.

You can see pics of it in my Readers Rigs section.

I can tell you a few good places to get one if you are interested.

Here's a link to AFE's site regarding the PG7 technology: http://www.afefilters.com/pg7.htm

I am new to TDR and I do have a little knoledge to your question. Any thing that will make it easier fro your turbo make boost normally will help keep EGTs low. On the other hand, like a couple of the other members stated that the aftermarket filters may void your warranty if used. Reguardless of what the aftermarket filter manufacturers labels say, the oil and cloth filters do not filter as well as the factory filters. The owner of "Turbo Engineering Group", in Golden, Colorado told me that he can thank these after market filters for about 25% of his business. A typical diesel turbo spins, I was told, spins over 150,000 at full boost. Any little particle that hits an intake compressor at this RPM will cause a minute amount of damage. Over the course of the engine life this dammage adds up and eventually unbalances the turbo: turbo engineering group balances a turbo at around 100,000 RPM. The air entering a turbo at full boost is traveling just under the speed of sound so that little partle exerts a lot of force. I am no expert, but the man I learned this from is. He told me the first thing I need toi do is get that K&N out of my 02.
