Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Will too much Cetane booster cause the lift pump to tick?

I made the mistake of letting my BIL borrow my truck for a couple hours today to move a bed, he insisted that he bring it back with a full tank of diesel which didn't bother me at all since she was at about 1/4 tank. I told him where to buy the diesel and I asked him to add some of the cetane booster/cleaner that I've been adding at every fill up. I had a bottle in the truck with about 8oz. left in it and I told him to use that when he filled up. Well I guess his son found a full bottle in the back seat because I keep a few in the truck and he used that instead of the almost empty bottle I showed him.



He brought the truck back with a full tank of diesel and an almost empty container of cetane booster. It looks like he dropped about 24oz - 26oz in for about 18 - 20 gallons of diesel, he also poured the booster in after filling up so I'm guessing it didn't get mixed up very well.



Here's the problem, the truck is running better than it ever has but the lift pump has started to tick... it's never made a noise before today and the truck has 99K miles on it.



Should I worry about the lift pump or should I just drive it until this tank of fuel is empty and never let him touch the truck again? Am I a little crazy to think the pump might quiet down once I get this out of the system?

Naw ... don't worry. Just run down the tank of fuel you have and go back to your regular schedule.



I think you have "extra ordinary hearing" after you found he put 3 times the normal about of additive in the truck. You are probably a little paranoid.

I could hear the lift pump ticking when he came around the corner of my street 150 yards away from my house, it's never made any noise before and it's ticking like crazy now... I'm not worried, I'm just wondering if this could be permanent or if I can expect it to die down once the system is back to normal.

My lift pump started ticking pretty good. So I replaced it about a month later with a new one. Fuel pressure was the same but the ticking was gone. If I had it to do over again I would have left it alone. and put up with the ticking.

You might want to try changing your fuel filter before you go to changing out any other parts. That added additive might have stirred up some gunk and deposited it in your fuel filter.

Mine has ticked since I bought it 2 yrs ago. . Runs fine, no problems. Ticks the same with an old fuel filter or new. .

I wouldnt worry about it. . Your injectors will get a nice cleaning with the excess additive. . wont hurt a bit

The ticking can be bothersome, but don't worry 'bout it until something does go wrong (eg fuel pressure drop,etc). What I say about my truck, "takes a lickin', keeps on tickin'" :-laf :-laf

I buy my filters from either a local dealer, or buy a bunch from genosgarage (genosgarage.com)
