I noticed that in Joe Donnelly's excellent article on winching - last TRD - he obviously couldn't cover everything - although almost - he didn't mention one of the greatest methods of self extraction where there are no trees - rocks - other vehicles - well simply NOTHING but open ground - like a desert. And that's simply burrying your spare tire 90 degrees to the pull. I've used this technique on a beach and in a desert situation - there are probably better illustrations but scroll down and you'll get the picture..... if you plan on using this technique - have a HD piece of iron to run over the outside of the tire - and attach through the wheel.
When we did this we buried the tire below grade and ran the cable back a long ways - we even cut a trench for the last 30-40 feet so the winch was pulling against old mother earth - ahe wasn't going to budge!
