Winding Too Tight?

I recently purchased my first diesel a 2004. 5 600 2500, she is awesome I still have the stock meats on her and have 373 gears, at about 85 mph I am turning 2500 rpm, I plan on upgrading to 33 inch tires that will help some but in the meantime how fast is too fast to run the engine for extended periods of time b/c I do a lot of interstate driving.

When these same engines are used in fire pumps and generators they run at rated speed for days on end. Usually in those applications they have a lower redline, more like 3200 rpm but thats where they run. They only thing you're hurting at that speed is fuel economy.

With the 4. 10 gears, 75 MPH in my truck equals 2500 RPM. I've run there for days on end pulling a 13,500 lb 5th wheel with no ill effects at all - no oil consumption, overheating, etc. The only thing damaged was my wallet - fuel consumption pulling a 5ver at these speeds is pretty bad (9. 5 MPG), but better than 6. 0 MPG at the same speed with my previous V-10 3500!



By the way, before the flaming starts, the 5ver has Michelin XPS Rib all-steel radials, and we're towing on open Interstates. I'd never think of running 75 MPH on the Goodyear Marathons or Wrangler HTs.

I'm with RustyJC on this one. When I tow our 5er (16k last time I weighed it plus truck weight) I like to run around 2600 rpm all day. In fifth gear that puts me about 62 mph. This combination of rpm and gear just seems like a sweet spot on my truck.
