Unique perspective on our new War

My computer keeps coming up with some message about how it has an "IP address conflict with IP adress 8907543 because it has hardware at IP 2947837". That's not it exactly, but you get the point. Every time this happens I lose the use of my internet for a while.

I have Windows 95 (will not upgrade), Pentium 133, and I have a network connection with a T10/100 card. There is no modem in my computer, just the network card. I have removed all dial up connections from the "connections" box in the "internet options" menu.

PLEASE HELP!!!

I'm no expert, but I'll try to help.

1) Have you installed anything new prior to this error?

2) Did you check the IP adress through the control panel and see what it is conflicting with.

I Believe sometimes you can select a different address that is not conflicting with some other profile.

I have had a similar problem in the past and had to select a "basic configuration" instead of letting the computer automatically select one.

The message you are getting means that something on your network is using the same address as your pc. IP addresses are like street addresses, there should only be one (device, house, building, etc) at each address and each address should be unique to one and only one (device, house, etc).

You said that you are on a network, so you will need to find out if your IP address is static or dynamically assigned. Go to start, settings, control panel, and network settings. Once there you will need to select TCP/IP protocol and go to the properties for it.

I'm going from memory now, so it may get strange, but there should be a tab for DHCP or something similar. You need to verify if an IP address has been manually entered into the IP settings area or if your PC gets it's IP address from a central server. If the address has been manually entered you will need to get with the network admin and find out why your IP address is being used by another device, and if the address is coming from a server you will have to get with the admin and ask why his DHCP server is giving your IP address to more than one device.

Maybe as clear as mud, but hopefully it helps

I've had this happen before. I have the @Home service. Even though my IP address is supposed to be static ( never changes ), I got that message one day. I called @Home and they said someone was using my IP address. I gave them the hardware address of the other user. They could possibly trace it back to him but decided to change my IP address immediately as a quick fix. I did have to edit my computer name that goes out over the network also. Took all of 3 minutes.
