Well my windshield creaked today. Truck sets outside in the cold, about 14 degrees, had to scrape off ice and used some ice melt spray on it. Then cranked up the defroster and drove down the road. The creak starts from underneath the wiper in the black area on the drivers side and goes up the window about 9 inches. Asked the glass company installer on the phone what would of caused this? He said that he bets I had a chip in the black area and when I turned on the defroster it creaked the window (never used the defroster on this truck before, and won't again). He will check it out when I take it in to be replaced Thursday. I don't remember anything hitting the window. Going with Mopar OEM glass and this company has been doing this since 1947 and the dealer recommended them. Never had this happen before in 35 years of driving. Is this common with our trucks or am I just lucky and get to shellout $250. 00?

creaks

you may want to check the archives.

your creak may be the infamous steering column creak

Check it out

When you typed in "creaked", It sounds like you meaned cracked, right?

When it comes to self breaking glass, I've seen it all. Last month, my friend/co-worker was driving his Powerstroke when all of a sudded his pasenger door window explodes. No other cars around for 1/2mi. An old Galaxy at the bodyshop my dad worked all of a sudden shattered it's big rear window,no one around but me and dad. And at the dealer I work at we've had two cars come in with wondows that "just cracked" while parked.

Front windshields are usually started by an old rock chip, so this is no suprise.

$250 is very good. A fellow TDR member paid about $450 to have his windshield replaced with Mopar glass.

Sorry about that I ment cracked :) . I searched the old threads on this and got a good tip about leaving a window cracked opened a little for a couple of days while the sealant dries. I guess when you slam the doors the pressure can screw up the install job. Sounds like this is not a common problem with glass cracking and hopefully the big truck has gotten it out of its system and won't do it again.

I dunno... so far _every_single_windshield_ I've had in a Ram has gotten cracked at one point or another. Currently I have a 10" crack that is the result of a wayward rock striking the windshield near the top on the passenger side in the black area. When it gets to be state inspection time (1. 5 years from now) I'll replace it.

None of my trucks have ever gotten their fill of catching rocks with their windshields. Maybe it's this wonderful Houston road construction that seems to be never-ending. Good luck with it!

I dunno, over xmas I was up in Flagstaff and it was 10*. That glass creaked like crazy! I've never noticed it down here in Phx.

I've never experienced anything like that before in the 20 years I lived up in the colder country.

Once it warmed up the creaking went away...

Same Here

Thought mine was gonna pop out last night, have never heard anything like it before. Was raining when I shut off the truck. Finished bowling 3 hours later and doors were frozen shut. Started it up and sat for a good 10 minutes, started to drive away and I thought the windshield was gonna end up out on the hood.

I agree with TORQUE THIS. When I back out of driveway in the morning it sounds like the windshield is going to pop out. Its been doing this for awhile.

Could be covered under Warranty

Mine cracked under the wipper blades. I was using the defroster in a snow storm. No other cars in site. The dealer said they would replace it IF there was no sign of a rock hitting the window. Sure enough, they found a small rock ding.

:( Mine cracked as I left my dealer for a L side wiper arm replacement. I found a small rock chip in the black area on the L side, to make it worse when I was leaving the glass shop I backed into some asian POC with my hitch and peeled the hood open like a can opener. It was a bad day that day.

I replaced my window only to have another rock crack the new one. To me a window that isnt broken is a luxury item.

I have had to windshields crack on other vehicles. Both were replaced by my insurance (Statefarm) for like 50bucks no questions asked!

With the 1/2" diameter road sand they use around here a windshield rarely lasts more than two years. I've been doing business with Olympic Glass, I give them a check for my deductible, $200, they give me a gift certificate for $200 at the supermarket of my choice and deal with my insurance company. New windshield is basically free, this not legal in all states. Think Olympic is nationwide.

What is the best glass to put in?

I have asked this before and some suggestions, but what are some brand names for high quality glass?

I am kinda partial to the factory glass as mine is still original at 205,000 miles. Finally got a crack (or is that creak). With all the highway miles and winter road sand, it is getting pretty hard to see through driving into the sun!

This glass has survived three direct hits from pheasents, numerous "dicky" birds. Have repaired proabably a dozen bullseyes from gravel roads. They never crack once repaird. I missed the one that caused the crack.

On my way home tonight all the sudden " BAMM" a pea sized rock hit my windshild , this gave me the start of the third rock chip and crack on my windshild in 6 mo.

I'm begining to think that my windshild is a rock magnet !! . At $350. 00 every six mo. for a new windshild it's starting to kill all my " fun " money . Tonight after this happend I was wondering if I was the only person with this problem and then I found this post . It's great to see other CTD Dodges

that are rock magnets . Ken S.

Guardian is the one I used. 5 star rated by Dodge and it is OEM glass for Dodge and GM. You want a major vendor. Cost $280. 00 including a new rubber seal and tax and labor cost.
